My thoughts on this volume (Slight Spoilers!)
Oh my goodness, what an exciting volume! While volume one had a mixture of human drama and monstrous horror, volume two focuses more on the human drama side of things, twisting and deviating certain characters and relationships to a surprising degree.
When “Minoru” came to Asahi’s apartment after returning from the dead in volume one, I had quite a few running theories. Maybe it’s a demon wearing Minoru’s face, coming for Asahi as it knew of her lingering attachments to him, I thought. Or, maybe, it really was Minoru, twisted and different after death, returning to Asahi has he also had some form of attachment to her even in death. After reading this volume I think all of my assumptions were off the mark, which has me enjoying it so much! My favourite stories are the ones where I truly can’t guess what will happen next.
In this volume we get a deeper look at Minoru when he was alive, and he seems to have always been a rather…complex character. Asahi knew this from the start, as she is shown to have fallen in love with him after catching him stomp on the possessions of a girl who dared give his younger brother a love letter. To Asashi, sure, his kindness was a nice thing to obtain, but what she really wanted was that level of obsession and possession. The kind that would lead you to go a little crazy at the thought of someone else encroaching on what is theirs.
Long story short, both Asahi and Minoru have always been a little bit different. It looks like the only normal one is Wataru, Minoru’s younger brother. Unfortunately, it seems like Wataru is the one suffering the most in this volume, as not only does the girl he’s been in love with forever, Asahi, threaten him with a knife, he also is forced to speak with the very-much alive, decapitated head of his older brother.
