My thoughts on this volume (Slight Spoilers!)

While I enjoyed the type of “turn your brain off and enjoy” slasher story volume one had to offer, I found volume two getting a little too crazy for my taste. As time drags on, stress, dehydration, fatigue, and the looming fear of the monkey creature returning begins taking a toll on the surviving characters.

I really enjoyed the various ways the authors depicted the characters slowly becoming more and more debilitated by their circumstances and surroundings. We see some come together to plot against others for their own benefit, while others start believing that there is a traitor colluding with the monkey creature. We also see just how desperate they get when they go long enough without food and water, leading to an interesting discussion about morals and ethics—would it be better to let one potentially drink poison and die, or to not test the drinks and let everyone die of dehydration?

In this volume we see several smaller groups of the hikers come together and split off slightly—with such a large cast of characters I appreciated this! We mainly follow the protagonist and his little group, but we also learn more about the side characters when we glimpse into their groups from time to time. I understand that it would be near impossible to flesh out so many characters in just two volumes, but I found that just about every character that died in this volume were characters I hadn’t seen much of. That is, apart from one incredibly impactful death.

Moving onto what I wasn’t all that crazy about in this volume, I really don’t understand why so many of the characters seem to be plotting against our protagonist. While there is a rumour that he caused someone’s death many years ago, that seems to be the only bad thing he’s done. He sticks his neck out time and time again for everyone after the initial monkey attack, and still, he’s met with accusations of sabotage. It got to a point where I found myself hoping the monkey would come back if only to take away some of the more annoying characters.

While I did enjoy how the authors depicted one certain character going absolutely crazy when accusations of colluding with the monkey creature were brought up, I did not enjoy how again, really the only character that has doubt cast upon them is our main character. Even if it starts with someone else, the second the protagonist is mentioned all blame seems to be instantly shifted to them! Why!?

If I were him I would cut my losses and try to escape on my own… Surely it would be better to be taken out by a crazy evil monkey than people who are meant to be your coworkers and teammates, right?
