What’s the series about? (chapter one spoilers!)

Usui is a second year high school student who is having difficulties making friends. While she tries to put herself out there, it’s difficult joining already established friend groups. So, she tries to take it slow by offering her classmates various favours. In her mind, if she does things like taking over library duties for a day, her classmates will slowly develop a favourable opinion of her.

In her classmates eyes though, rather than a kind and helpful classmate, they see her as a masochist. Much to her dismay, she overhears two boys in her class laughing and calling her such after taking over another duty.

Once she begins helping out in the library that same day, she’s shocked to discover that her partner is none other than Minato. Minato is a bright and happy person, always surrounded by friends. While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with this, interacting with him is a hurdle a bit too high for poor socially awkward Usui.

So, she offers to let him skirt on his library duties as well. She’d rather do a bit of extra work than have to put up with an uncomfortable social situation. When he asks her why she’s so insistent on doing all the work by herself, she replies “because I’m a masochist”, thinking it would turn him off. Unexpectedly, rather than pulling away, he simply beings ordering her around. He reminds her that if she really is a masochist, she should enjoy being ordered around. Much to her own surprise, she surprisingly doesn’t dislike following Minato’s orders, and before long the two have the library put back in order.

This starts a new impure but somehow still pure relationship between the two students.

My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers for chapter one)

My goodness was this ever funny!? Watching Usui awkwardly listen to every one of Minato’s orders was surprisingly entertaining. You can see both of them slowly realize they’re actually into the whole dynamic in real time, with Usui being just a tad more awkward about it than Minato.

Poor Usui who just wanted to make some friends now has a huge hurdle to jump over. She already found Minato to be intimidating when they didn’t have a relationship, so now that they have this unexplainable relationship, there’s only uncertainty ahead of her. The night after the library interaction happens, she stays up late wondering exactly why she got so into it, and starts imagining what other things he could ask her to do. Her little daydream segments of Minato as an “ore-sama” character were absolutely hilarious!

As awkward as she is, naturally, she tries to avoid him at school. It doesn’t last for long, and she eventually blurts out an apology for being such a pervert. What should be an awkward conversation turns sweet, as Minato seems to be very good at dealing with people. He asks her for an explanation behind the sudden apology, and then is able to completely flip the conversation on its head.

It doesn’t hurt that I already love the opposites attract trope, but I really enjoyed this chapter! Hopefully Usui will be able to gain some confidence through Minato, and then maybe she can finally make some friends of her own!
