My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
This manga tells the story of a sentient parasite that gives its all to save a royal princess, A.K.A it’s host, from her two murderous step-siblings. I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this one based on the synopsis, so I ended up borrowing volume one from the library. I’m very glad I ended up reading it, as it was definitely a unique experience!
Stella, the sole blood relative to the now late king, finds herself in a bit of a predicament. Her two step siblings, who pretend to be her allies as the only remaining royals, are actually constantly plotting her murder. For some strange reason however, Stella just won’t die. Poisoning her does nothing, nor does releasing a ferocious beast into her bedroom while she sleeps.
Is Stella secretly some ultra-powerful princess who has been hiding her talents from her family this whole time? No. What’s actually happening is that she has a parasite protecting her from the inside.
The way we’re introduced to the parasite is quite interesting—we follow along as it slowly realises the fact that it is indeed a parasite, and that it’s living inside Stella’s intestines. I really enjoyed following the parasite’s point of view, because otherwise I would never stop to think about its circumstances. The storytelling forces you to see Stella more as a third party, and focus mostly on the parasite. This isn’t to say that we don’t learn anything about Stella, as we do get to see glimpses of her personality sprinkled throughout the volume.
Unlike the parasites in the manga Parasite, this one sees Stella as it’s master. It just wants to live a long life, so it has no choice but to protect Stella. Stella is completely unaware of its existence for the majority of the volume, leading to several entertaining scenes. It can only fully take control of Stella’s body while she’s asleep, so, during the night we see her crawl around like a demon as it learns how to maneuver her body. During the day, we watch as she interacts with her step siblings who have grown rather scared of the undying princess, completely unaware of the fact they want her dead.
There were a few twists and turns throughout this volume, with the final few pages providing a glimpse at what type of story this manga will truly be. I am a bit afraid the parasites will end up being mostly hostile alien creatures, similar to Parasite, but nothing has been revealed yet!
