My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
Fumi is a high school girl looking for her prince charming. After being abandoned by her family and left homeless, looking for a man to take care of her isn’t all that outrageous. The first man she happens upon—or should I say, the first man that happens upon her—is her mysterious new classmate, Kyutaro. Unfortunately for her, the only thing on his mind seems to be cleaning. And the room she turned into her temporary home is one of the rooms he is assigned to clean.
Their first meeting was one of absolute chaos—her sleeping peacefully in a storage room, and him entering it completely oblivious to her presence. So, it makes total sense that both of them freaked out a little bit at the other. Although Kyutaro really is handsome, that painful of a first meeting would be more than enough to take away any potential he could have as a prince charming.
I quite enjoyed Fumi and Kyutaro! Although this is just a three volume prequel series, the author took the time to thoroughly establish their unique relationship. While at the start Fumi seems to have no romantic interest in Kyutaro, by the end of the volume she clearly has a mixture of adoration and respect for him. Kyutaro on the other hand, is a total mystery. But who doesn’t love a little mystery in a male lead?
While he’s quiet and a little rough around the edges, he’s clearly a good person at heart. I loved how he worked so hard to get through to Fumi about the realities of the job she signed up for. While sure, he can seem a bit mean and strict at times, you have to be serious when you’re putting your life on the line. Now you may be thinking “isn’t this a manga about cleaning?”, and you would be right! One of the most interesting things about this volume was about the literal dangers of being dirty.
At its heart, Kyutaro’s job is about keeping things clean. When things get too dirty, dirt monsters can appear. His job is to clean things before the monsters can appear, and to defeat the monsters after they materialize. These dirt monsters don’t just appear in reality, but also in people’s minds. It’s kind of like how when you spend too long in a messy room, your mind gets all foggy. Or how when the dirtier a place is, the more the mere thought of cleaning it weighs on your mind. Honestly, this was such a creative way to display the negativities that come with being in a messy environment!
