Amelia no Koukiteki Romance / アメーリアの好奇的ロマンス – Volume One Manga Review

Ameri is a high school student with a big secret—she’s a web-novelist. As it’s something she holds close to her heart, she doesn’t want her classmates to find out. Sadly, after an incident in the infirmary, her secret gets revealed to an infamous classmate. Rather than make fun of her hobby though, he instead offers to act as potential material to write about.

What’s this series about?

Ameri started turning heads the second she entered her new high school. As she’s beautiful, smart, and suspected of being from a rich family, that comes with the territory. While she was a little worried at first, she was able to make friends and settle in rather quickly. Everything seemed to be going okay until she stumbled upon what appears to be a public breakup while out with her new classmates.

The boy at the centre of the commotion, Haruka, is a notorious playboy, her friends begin explaining. There are so many rumours about him that it would be impossible to list them all, they continue. Ameri, wanting to continue living in peace, makes a mental note to stay far away from him.

Not long after making this mental note, she excuses herself to the infirmary after being unable to focus in class. It’s here that she accidentally witnesses him having an intimate scene with a different girl. Haruka playfully confronts Ameri after he realizes she’s there, causing her to drop her phone. He picks it up for her, only to discover a big secret she’s been working to hide from her classmates—she’s a web-novelist, specializing in reincarnation romance stories.

She begs him to not reveal her secret to anyone, and to her surprise, he agrees. He even earnestly reads what she’s written so far, and offers to listen to her thoughts on where the story will go from here. Ameri admits that she’s been having difficulty ramping up the romance—it’s difficult to write about something you’ve never experienced, after all. Haruka then offers to teach her about romance, or at the very least, to let her use him as reference material for her male lead.

While Ameri is a little apprehensive to give in, she just can’t turn down such a handsome face.

My thoughts on this volume (spoilers!)

I sampled this series quite a while ago, but never got around to reading the full volume until now! When will I learn…

I enjoyed this one so much, and I really regret not buying volume two together when I bought volume one. Ameri and Haruka’s relationship is so fun and playful, they’re very fun to watch! If you like playful, sli~ghtly toxic male leads, you’ll love this one.

One of the reasons I was able to enjoy this series so much is because of Ameri’s writing. She has her own aspirations, and she works hard on her goal! Although romance will happen, it’s not the defining thing in her life. I related to her quite a bit when she talked about the reasoning behind why she didn’t want her classmates to know she was a novelist—when you care about something that much, sometimes you don’t want those around you to know. Especially if they may not react how you want them to.

When her secret was revealed to Haruka, I was a little bit worried with where the story would go from there. It would be a defining moment in his characterization, so I was slightly worried he would use it as teasing ammunition. Thankfully, he took her in earnest and decided to go all out with helping her. At heart he really seems like a genuine, kind character. Maybe he’s just a little misunderstood because he’s playful?

Watching him watch her write the novel was also very sweet, as it’s clear he has a genuine interest in her. This genuine interest, mixed in with teasing, makes for a very fun relationship! I think Ameri made the correct choice in not believing the rumours around him, as rumours don’t define a person.

But… there are rumours for a reason—right? I’m a little bit worried about how the girls who are interested in Haruka will react when they notice him spending so much time with Ameri. Also, why was he in the nightclub district!? I was worried he was going to be revealed to actually be a host, but thankfully that didn’t happen. Still, I would like to know his motivations for what he does when he’s not around Ameri…It seems like he’s with a different woman every night, and he’s still just in high school!

My favourite parts of this volume (spoilers)

💛 The way the author draw eyes—specifically, she has this way of drawing them very starry and dreamy! It really works with the overall romantic-but-playful atmosphere of this series.

💚 Ameri using just about everything Haruka does as reference for her novel—to the point that she’ll pull out her phone and start writing the second after he does something. And he just sits there happily and watches her write every time! They’re so cute together.

💙 Haruka happily tagging along to the theme cafe with Ameri! He seems to genuinely want to learn more about her interests!

💚 Haruka borrowing the dress for Ameri to try on so that she could feel like a princess in a reincarnation novel!! He saw that she was feeling sad, and wanted to cheer her up!

💛 That dream scenario that ended the volume…oh my goodness.
