Sono Kao de Aisanaide / その顔で愛さないで – Volume Two Manga Review

With Makoto gone, Nora and Nozomu agree to do whatever they can to bring their corrupt family down from the inside. Nora’s grief, alongside the fact that Nozomu and Makoto share the same face, makes it difficult to move along with their plan. Will she be able to pull through?

My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

While Volume One spent most of its time on setting up the premise of the series and introducing all of the different characters, Volume Two establishes a web of secrets and lies that have been present since before Nora even joined the family. Themes of guilt and regret are still heavily present in this volume, and Nora really struggles to do much of anything.

We learn more about how Nora and Makoto’s relationship came to be, with them first becoming romantically entangled at a young age. While everything we’ve been shown of the late Makoto up until this point had him looking like a somewhat meek, but still competent, heir to the house, a secret of his is revealed at the very end of this volume that could change his very character—for the worse. Was everything he told Nora a lie? What actually happened to him on the day of the accident? This volume raised many a question about him.

Nora and Nozomu’s relationship also grows much more complex in this volume, showing just how much Makoto’s death is affecting her—again, Nozomu is Makoto’s twin brother, they share the same face. While they agreed to be in a pretend relationship to help Nora stabilize in the previous volume, their relationship grows rather precarious in this one. They haven’t liked each other from the start, but his face being the same as Makoto was enough to placate her. Now though, while she still claims to hate him, it’s clear she is harboring some feelings for Nozomu. Is it because he looks like her ex-fiance? Or, has she started growing attached to the only other person who seems to genuinely hate how the family has dealt with the death of Makoto? Again, this volume raised oh so many questions.

My favourite parts of this volume (spoilers)

💛 The closet scene mirroring how Nora’s relationship had been with Makoto, to how her relationship currently is with Nozomu.

💚 The maid literally taking down a door with an axe The Shining style, after Nozomu ran away from her because he didn’t want to sleep with her.

💙 Nozomu offering to take Nora down the path of revenge—we love a good revenge story!

❤️ Nozomu revealing that he had found Makoto’s diary—this explains how he was able to sometimes say things exactly how Makoto would have said them. It’s because Makoto had written them!

💙 The introduction of Makoto’s arranged fiance at the very end! The secrets she revealed… Or, maybe she was just instructed to say what she said? There’s only one way to find out…
