My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

With everything that happened in the previous volume, and with this being the final volume of the series, I was really worried I wouldn’t be satisfied with the ending. I mean, there were just so many loose ends that needed to be tied up. Not to mention the introduction of a literal god at the end of the previous volume. Thankfully, the author was able to end this story beautifully, and I was left very satisfied.

While there are still a few things I’m curious about, I actually prefer it this way. I love a story that can rely on its readers to put the pieces together themselves, rather than spoon feed everything.

I genuinely had no idea where the plot was going right until the end. When the god was introduced in the previous volume, I was absolutely certain they were introduced as a villain. They did break into Bell’s dream world and smash the hourglass after all. In this volume, they go as far as possessing Bell’s body. As I was still unsure of whether Jino was a villain at this time, I was very unsure how to think. To me, Jino had all but kidnapped Bell and was using Mei for some unknown purpose. So, when Jino looked horrified at the sight of Bell’s body being possessed, I was a little confused. Was he upset because he actually wasn’t an enemy of Bell? Or, was he just upset at the sight of seeing a possessed body?

Just as I was getting confused, things started falling into place. We finally got to learn about Jino’s backstory—something I had been eagerly waiting for since I started this series. The only backstory we had until this point was the partially incorrect story of how Bell’s magic caused the king to catch fire. This bit of backstory did absolutely nothing to explain Jino’s strange obsession with Bell, so I was trying so hard to find hints about their past as I read. My assumptions were completely wrong in the end, but it was still fun to try and guess.

Jino and Bell had such a lovely backstory! While it did end in hurt, it did perfectly explain their very fractured relationship. As the witches in this world basically live forever, the only people that they can really connect with are other witches. So, if you were to fight with the only person who really understood you, you would probably go a little crazy as well.

All in all, this was as good an ending as I could have hoped for from this series. There was no romance between Mei and Bell, and I’m so happy for that. I was hoping they would have more of a friendship, or mentor-mentee relationship, and that’s exactly what I got! This really is a story about the importance of friendship and maintaining relationships with those that are important to you. With a little magic sprinkled in, of course.

My favourite parts of this volume (spoilers)

💛 The art—this series has some of my favourite art, especially in the covers! I cannot get over how beautiful it is.

💚 Pike—though she was only introduced in this volume, she broke her way into my heart instantly. She’s competent, the best at what she does, and is absolutely insane.

💙 The revelation that both Jino and the god are not evil!! The god did literally everything because he felt so bad watching Jino struggle for all those years!

❤️ The revelation that the silver wizards were created to help Jino! They really had been the whole time, I think he just didn’t fully realize it.

💙 The name switch!!! I thought that was such a cute idea!? And they kept it going for all this time!! Jino and Bell are so cute together, oh my goodness.

💚 Mei’s first appearance in Bell’s silver wheat field being what reminded him of his love for humanity! It makes sense why they became friends so quickly.

💛 Mei finally making her way into the dream world, and finally having a proper conversation with Bell!! Finally!! It took so long, but it was worth the wait.

💚 Bell waking up at the perfect moment to save Mei from Pike—While I do love Pike, I also loved watching Mei get saved from her craziness.
