It’s time for our daily Japanese vocabulary! It’s important to study a little bit every day, so let’s work hard to remember one new word every single day.
Today’s Kanji character we’re going to be focusing on is… 王！
Please remember that I use a mix of formal and casual Japanese in these posts! I use the type of language often found in shoujo manga.
What does 王 mean?
王 is a Kanji character that is read as: おう・ou. The meaning that we’ll be focusing on today is “ruler of a country”. Let’s take a look at some sample sentences using various Kanji compound words containing “王”:
王冠・おうかん・oukan
Example sentences
English: One day, I’d like to wear a beautiful crown.
Romaji only: Itsuka, kireina oukan wo kaburitai.
Hiragana only: いつか、きれいな おうかん を かぶりたい。
Final: いつか、綺麗な王冠を被りたい。
English: That crown was decorated with jewels.
Romaji only: Ano oukan wa houseki de kazarareteimashita.
Hiragana only: あの おうかん は ほうせき で かざられていました。
Final: あの王冠は宝石で飾られていました。
王女・おうじょ・oujo
Example sentences
English: Please do as the princess says.
Romaji only: Oujo no iu toori ni shite kudasai.
Hiragana only: おうじょ の いう とおり に して ください。
Final: 王女の言う通りにしてください。
English: It sounds like the princess fell in love with someone in the city.
Romaji only: Oujo wa tomin no dareka to koi ni ochita rashii desu.
Hiragana only: おうじょ は とみん の だれか と こい に おちた らしい です。
Final: 王女は都民の誰かと恋に落ちたらしいです。
国王・こくおう・kokuou
Example sentences
English: You must obey the crown / ruler / king.
Romaji only: Kokuou ni shitagawanakereba naranai.
Hiragana only: こくおう に したがわなければ ならない。
Final: 国王に従わなければならない。
English: While the crown’s influence was weakened, war began.
Romaji only: Oukoku no eikyou ga yowamatteiru aida ni, sensou ga hajimarimashita.
Hiragana only: おうこく の えいきょう が よわまっている あいだ に、せんそう が はじまりました。
Final: 王国の影響が弱まっている間に、戦争が始まりました。
王宮・おうきゅう・oukyuu
Example sentences
English: It seems like a fairy-like princess is living in the royal castle.
Romaji only: Oukyuu ni, yousei mitaina oujo ga sundeiru rashii.
Hiragana only: おうきゅう に、 ようせい みたいな おうじょ が すんでいる らしい。
Final: 王宮に、妖精みたいな王女が住んでいるらしい。
English: An assassin snuck into the royal palace, and kidnapped the queen in the night.
Romaji only: Ansatsusha ga oukyuu ni shinobikonde, ouhi wo shinyarachi shimashita.
Hiragana only: あんさつしゃ が おうきゅう に しのびこんで、おうひ を しんやらち しました。
Final: 暗殺者が王宮に忍び込んで、王妃を深夜拉致しました。
王子・おうじ・ouji

English: Upon seeing the prince’s interview, I thought we would become a good king.
Romaji only: Ouji no mensetsu wo mitara, ii ousama ni naru to omoimashita.
Hiragana only: おうじ の めんせつ を みたら、いい おうさま に なる と おもいました。
Final: 王子の面接を見たら、いい王様になると思いました。
English: The prince is searching for a marriage partner!?
Romaji only: Ouji ga kekkon aite wo sagashiteiru towa!?
