It’s time for our daily Japanese vocabulary! It’s important to study a little bit every day, so let’s work hard to remember one new word every single day.
Today’s Kanji character we’re going to be focusing on is… 右！
Please remember that I use a mix of formal and casual Japanese in these posts! I use the type of language often found in shoujo manga.
What does 右 mean?
右 is a Kanji character that is read as: みぎ・migi. It means right, as in the opposite of left. Let’s take a look at a few compound words using 右:
右足・みぎあし・migiashi
Example sentences
English: I hurt my right leg playing soccer.
Romaji only: Sakka- de migiashi wo kega shita.
Hiragana only: サッカー で みぎあし を けが した。
Final: サッカーで右足を怪我した。
English: For some reason, I feel like my right leg’s kicks are stronger than my lefts.
Romaji only: Nazeka, hidariashi yori migiashi no keri no hou ga tsuyoi ki ga suru.
Hiragana only: なぜか、ひだりあし より みぎあし の けり の ほう が つよい き が する。
Final: なぜか、左足より右足の蹴りの方が強い気がする。
左右・さゆう・sayuu
Example sentences
English: I shook my head left and right.
Romaji only: Atama wo sayuu ni furimashita.
Hiragana only: あたま を さゆう に ふりました。
Final: 頭を左右に振りました。
English: As if they were saying “no”, they wagged their finger left and right.
Romaji only: “iie” to iu mitai ni, yubi wo sayuu ni futta.
Hiragana only: 「いいえ」と いう みたい に、ゆび を さゆう に ふった。
Final: 「いいえ」と言うみたいに、指を左右に振った。
右側・みぎがわ・migigawa
Example sentences
English: I made a promise with my boyfriend to meet at the convenience store on the right side of the road.
Romaji only: Kareshi to michi no migigawa ni aru konbini de shuugou suru yakusoku wo shita.
Hiragana only: かれし と みち の みぎがわ に ある コンビニ で しゅうごう する やくそく を した。
Final: 彼氏と道の右側にあるコンビニで集合する約束をした。
English: Recently, the number of high school students drinking on the right side of the river bank has increased.
Romaji only: Saikin, kawazoi no migigawa de osake wo nondeiru koukousei ga fuetekimashita.
Hiragana only: さいきん、かわぞい の みぎがわ で おさけ を のんでいる こうこうせい が ふえてきました。
Final: 最近、川沿いの右側でお酒を飲んでいる高校生が増えてきました。
右岸・うがん・ugan
Example sentences
English: I enjoy taking a walk along the right bank of the river, every morning.
Romaji only: Maiasa, kawa no ugan wo sanpo suru no ga suki desu.
Hiragana only: まいあさ、かわ の うがん を さんぽ する の が すき です。
Final: 毎朝、川の右岸を散歩するのが好きです。
English: A seagull is looking at the fish in the river from the right bank.
Romaji only: Kamome wa ugan de kawa no sakana wo miteiru.
Hiragana only: カモメ は うがん で かわ の さかな を みている。
Final: カモメは右岸で川の魚を見ている。
