It’s time for our daily Japanese vocabulary! It’s important to study a little bit every day, so let’s work hard to remember one new word every single day.
Today’s Kanji character we’re going to be focusing on is… 一！
Please remember that I use a mix of formal and casual Japanese in these posts! I use the type of language often found in shoujo manga.
What does 一 mean?
ー is a Kanji character that is read as: いち・ichi. It means one. While we use this character when counting things, we can also see it in many different compound words! Let’s take a look at a few:
一群・いちぐん・ichigun
Example sentences
English: I saw a flock of birds.
Romaji only: Tori no ichigun wo mimashita.
Hiragana only: とり の いちぐん を みました。
Final: 鳥の一群を見ました。
English: I saw a flock of sheep yesterday.
Romaji only: Kinou, hitsuji no ichigun wo mimashita.
Hiragana only: きのう、 ひつじ の いちぐん を みました。
Final: 昨日、羊の一群を見ました。
一着・いっちゃく・icchaku
Example sentences
English: I came in first place in the marathon.
Romaji only: Watashi wa marason de icchaku ni natta.
Hiragana only: わたし は マラソン で いっちゃく に なった。
Final: 私はマラソンで一着になった。
English: She came in first place.
Romaji only: Kanojo wa icchaku ni natta.
Hiragana only: かのじょ は いっちゃく に なった。
Final: 彼女は一着になった。
一切・いっさい・issai
Example sentences
English: When I opened my eyes, I realized it was all a dream.
Romaji only: Me wo samashitara, issai ga yume datta to wakarimashita.
Hiragana only: め を さましたら、いっさい が ゆめ だった と わかりました。
Final: 目を覚ましたら、一切が夢だったと分かりました。
English: I want my boyfriend to tell me everything but…
Romaji only: Kareshi ni issai no koto wo oshiete moraitai kedo…
Hiragana only: かれし に いっさい の こと を おしえて もらいたい けど。。。
Final: 彼氏に一切のことを教えてもらいたいけど。。。
一流・いちりゅう・ichiryuu
Example sentences
English: She took me to a first-class restaurant.
Romaji only: Kanojo ga ichiryuu no resutoran ni tsureteitte kuremashita.
Hiragana only: かのじょ が いちりゅう の レストラン に つれていって くれました。
Final: 彼女が一流のレストランに連れて行ってくれました。
English: That I get to stay in a first-class hotel… it’s an honour.
Romaji only: Ichiryuu no hoteru ni tomaru to wa… kouei desu.
Hiragana only: いちりゅう ホテル に とまる とは。。。こうえい です。
Final: 一流ホテルに泊まるとは。。。光栄です。
一見・いっけん・ikken
Example sentences
English: At a glance they seem like a scary person, but when I spoke to them they were very kind.
Romaji only: Ikken kowasouna hito dakedo, hanashitemitara totemo yasashii hito deshita.
Hiragana only: いっけん こわそうな ひと だけど、はなしてみたら とても やさしい ひと でした。
Final: 一見怖そうな人だけど、話してみたらとても優しい人でした。
English: The animal I thought was a cat at first glance, turned out to be a racoon when I got closer.
Romaji only: Ikken neko dato omotta doubutsu wa, chikaduitara tanuki deshita.
Hiragana only: いっけん ねこ だと おもった どうぶつ は、ちかづいたら たぬき でした。
Final: 一見猫だと思った動物は、近づいたら狸でした。
