Moto Maou-sama to Koi suru Hana / 元魔王様と恋する花 – Chapter One Manga Review

Everything Kanon thought she knew has just been flipped upside down. The family that was supposed to treasure her, sold her off into slavery. The demon lord that was supposed to be a horrific monster, saved her life. What’s she supposed to do from here?

What’s this series about?

Kanon is the eldest daughter of an aristocratic family. Though she should be treasured and papered by those around her, she’s treated like a burden by everyone besides her step-brother. Her step-mother and maids treat her with an especially high degree of cruelty, and secretly rejoice when the day of her arranged marriage approaches.

Before the day can come though, Kanon is kidnapped. She’s quickly set to be sold off to a demon, and is forced into chains and a carriage. Once the carriage makes its way into the demon realm, demons quickly surround it and begin placing bids on her. As the auction is taking place, a mysterious man approaches the scene and questions the demons. He reminds them all that human trafficking is illegal, and kills them all in the blink of an eye.

This mysterious man then politely helps Kanon out of the carriage, and introduces himself as the former demon lord. He proposes sending her back to the human world, but Kanon’s unique situation leads to her needing to stay close to her saviour.

My thoughts on this chapter (spoilers)

I really enjoyed this chapter, but I was just a tiny bit put off by the ending. The idea that the only way to suck out the magic that’s jeopardizing Kanon’s life is by having a child with a demon is…something. I was also a little put off by the sudden introduction of romance right after this revelation. It really went 0-100. Like, “please let me help you out of the carriage my lady” to “please have my baby” in about 3 pages.

I am interested in learning about why this demon is a former demon lord. Also, why does he look very much like a human while all of the others look animalistic? Perhaps it’s based on magical power?

I think the most unique thing about this series is the mysterious mark on Kanon’s chest—the same mark that the demon has on his face. As it apparently is only a mark that should appear on demons, what does that make her? I’m curious if Kanon’s mother was hiding some dark secrets from her prior to her death. Maybe her “father” wasn’t actually her father? Maybe her real father was a demon, and that’s why she has the mark? That would also explain the reason her father wasn’t present whatsoever in the story.
