And that phrase is… Atari sawari nai!
What does atari sawari nai mean?
As this is a phrase made up of two words, I’ll break them down separately.
当たる・あたる・ataru
This word has more meaning than I can count, but a few of the most common ones are: to hit, to be equivalent to, and to be correct. For today’s lesson, we’re going to be utilizing the “hit” meaning.
障る・さわる・sawaru
This word means to be harmful, to irritate, to injure.
当たり障りない・あたりさわりない・atari sawari nai
When we put them together in a phrase, it comes to mean “to be inoffensive”, “to be harmless”, “to be neutral”.
There are a few different particle usages that we can see in this phrase, so be sure to keep an eye out:
- 当たり障りない
- 当たり障りのない
- 当たり障りがない
Let’s try using 当たり障りない・あたりさわりない・atari sawari nai in a sentence!
Example 1
English: As I didn’t know where to start, I chose a safe topic.
Romaji only: Nani kara hajimatte ii no ka wakaranakatta tame, atari sawari no nai topikku ni shimashita.
Hiragana only: なに から はじまって いい の か わからなかった ため、あたりさわり の ない トピック に しました。
Final: 何から始まっていいのか分からなかったため、当たり障りのないトピックにしました。
Example 2
English: She has a very harmless personality, even though she’s older and accomplished, she doesn’t make anyone feel intimidated.
Romaji only: Kanojo wa atari sawari no nai seikaku de, toshiue de erai hito na no ni, hanashi aite ni iatsukan wo kanjisasenai.
Hiragana only: かのじょ は あたりさわり の ない せいかく で、としうえ で えらい ひと なのに、はなし あいて に いあつかん を かんじさせない。
Final: 彼女は当たり障りのない性格で、年上で偉い人なのに、話し相手に威圧感を感じさせない。
Example 3
English: They always have a neutral expression on their face, so I have no idea what they’re thinking.
Romaji only: Itsumo atari sawari no nai hyoujou wo shiteiru kara, nani wo kangaeteiru no ka mattaku wakaranai.
Hiragana only: いつも あたりさわり の ない ひょうじょう を している から、なに を かんがえている の か わからない。
Final: いつも当たり障りのない表情をしているから、何を考えているのか全く分からない。
Example 4
English: I think it’s safer to have neutral/safe conversations with people you have just met.
Romaji only: Atta bakari no hito to wa, atari sawari no nai kaiwa shita hou ga anzen da to omou.
Hiragana only: あった ばかり の ひと と は、あたりさわり ない かいわ した ほう が あんぜん だ と おもう。
Final: 会ったばかりの人とは、当たり障りない会話した方が安全だと思う。
Example 5
English: I don’t really like his safe personality. He seems nice but, I never know what he’s thinking for one, it’s a bit difficult for me.
Romaji only: Kare no atari sawari no nai seikaku ga amari suki janai. Yasashisou ni mieru kedo, hontou no shisou ga wakaranai shi, chotto nigate da.
Hiragana only: かれ の あたりさわり の ない せいかく が あまり すき じゃない。やさしそう に みえる けど、ほんとう の しそう が わからない し、ちょっと にがて だ。
Final: 彼の当たり障りのない性格があまり好きじゃない。優しそうに見えるけど、本当の思想が分からないし、ちょっと苦手だ。
