What’s this series about?

14 year old Yui has been suicidal ever since she can remember. No matter what she does though, her plans to die always fall through. Perhaps its fate then, that one day she wakes up in the middle of an unfamiliar room, with a strange device attached to her neck.

She wakes up without much memory of the previous few days, in what she assumes to be her school’s gym uniform. She’s not alone in this room, with there being a total of 332 others with her, all in gym uniforms with devices around their necks. These strangers all range in age, without there being all that many similarities about them.

Before Yui can get much of a grasp on her situation, a bubbly girl strikes up a conversation with her. There are so many adults in the room, she says, she only felt at ease when she found another person close to her own age. The two girls quickly find out that they have the same last name, and begin to bond over it. Not long after, a voice booms across the room they’ve found themselves stuck in, explaining that a game is about to start.

They’re to play a simple game of dodgeball just for an hour, but those who get an “out” will have their heads exploded. A list of all player’s names flash upon a screen, and its revealed that all 333 people in the room share the same last name.

This twisted game awakens a fighting spirit in the previously suicidal Yui, as she being to play.

My thoughts on this chapter

While I’m not the biggest fan of battle royale-type stories, this one has caught my interest. Just in the first chapter, the authors showed that they’re not afraid to kill off seemingly important characters. This caused me to be very careful with who I secretly wanted to root for, as I felt like no one beside the main character was actually safe.

I liked the addition of all players having the same last name for some reason, as it adds some extra flavour to the series. Typically these types of stories give away the reason for the game at the very beginning, and that reason is usually rather superficial. This time around we have absolutely no idea why these people were chosen, who chose them, or how many will be allowed to survive. I’m also loving following a female lead around this time around!

So far, I’m enjoying how the story is being introduced. There’s absolutely no hand holding, but the story isn’t so complicated that it feels confusing. I think I will enjoy watching at the mystery unfolds.
