Kiraware Majo to Karada ga Irekawatta keredo, Watashi wa Kyou mo Genki ni Kurashiteimasu / 嫌われ魔女と体が入れ替わったけれど、私は今日も元気に暮らしています – Volume One Manga Review

After enduring endless hardships in order to finally get a grasp on magic and become the queen of an empire, Marietta had her body forcefully stolen from her on the day of her marriage ceremony. Rather than be upset at her new circumstance though, she’s a little too happy about being granted a new body.

What’s this series about?

Magic is used to bless and protect the inhabitants of this world, so naturally, a queen should be bless with magical powers. Our protagonist, Marietta, is the princess of a smaller noble family, and was sent off at a young age to become betrothed to the crown prince. When it was discovered that Marietta doesn’t hold a drop of magical power, she is sent to the magical tower to receive training.

From the moment she stepped foot in the tower, she wouldn’t leave again until she turned 18. She spent every waking minute trying to better herself so that she could be a worthy queen, but no matter what she did, she just couldn’t use magic. She becomes very knowledgeable about magic theory, but it means nothing if she can’t actually apply it.

On the night of her marriage ceremony, Marietta is able to summon a fantastic magical creature… and then passes out. When she reawakens, she finds herself in a rather creepy looking basement dungeon. She quickly learns that she was made to forcefully switch bodies with the “evil witch of the forest”, and that the original owner of her body was, and still is, hated by all. Marietta doesn’t really care about any of that, because in her new body she can use magic! It turns out all the time she spend studying magical theory wasn’t a waste of time after all.

Now that she no longer has to marry the crown prince—something she only was going to do for the sake of her family—she is finally free. As she is a very kind person at heart, she isn’t worried about her new bodies notoriety. As long as she earnestly apologizes for her past misdeeds and acts as a good witch from here on out, there should be no problems, right?

My thoughts on this volume

Marietta is the picture-perfect “kind heroine”. No matter what situation she finds herself in, she is somehow able to see the good. Normally I would find such a character a little bit annoying, but she’s just so sweet, I can’t help but love her.

When she was on the path to become queen, though she really did not want to marry the cold crown prince, she didn’t complain once. It’s really only revealed how much she disliked him when she was finally free of him. After being trapped in the tower for so many years it was fun to discover the world of this manga-verse alongside Marietta.

We quickly meet a magical beast in the form of a cat after Marietta gets her new body, and again, while I normally really don’t like talking animal characters, the cat had its own charms! This is a series full of magic and kindness, all wrapped up with a fluffy bow. I’m hoping things stay on the more lighthearted side, especially when Marietta begins interacting with the townspeople in her new village.
