The most eligible Valentine’s Day dates – shoujo manga edition

The votes are in and tallied, so let’s get into which shoujo manga characters are the most popular Valentine’s Day dates!

For this survey, recipients were allowed to choose as many characters as they wanted. The goal was to see who everyone’s most preferred Valentine’s date would be—it wouldn’t be fair to limit one character per person!

The results

Let me preface this by saying I was a little bit surprised by the results. A blank “insert your own character here” option was left in case a character was left out, and multiple survey-takers all wrote out the same male lead’s name—Hak! Sorry to the Yona of the Dawn fans, I completely forgot to add one of the most prime candidates.

Secondly, I am a little bit worried about one specific result. I too am a fan of a good toxic romance, but I certainly wouldn’t want to spend a day with someone who very may murder me. Especially not on the most romantic day of the year! So, to all of the people who choose Firefly Wedding’s Shinpei over Colette Decides to Die’s Hades, I’m judging you just a tiny bit. Do you really think Shinpei would show you a more romantic time than Hades!?

The most wanted men

There was a three-way tie for the most popular male lead this Valentine’s Day! In no particular order, the people voted for:

Gaku, from Choking on Love

Zen, from Love, That’s an Understatement

Itsuomi, from A Sign of Affection

Here are the rest of the men, all in order:

2nd place: Iori, from How I Met My Soulmate

3rd place (three-way tie): Ichimura, from Glasses with a Chance of Delinquent; Tomoe, from Kamisama Kiss; Shinpei, from Firefly Wedding

4th place (tie): Hades, from Colette Decides to Die; Tamon, from Tamon’s B-Side

5th place (tie): Tenshin, from Shiokaze to Ryuu no Sumika; Hananoi, from A Condition Called Love

6th place (tie): Ninomae, from Fall in Love you False Angels; Watarase, from Tokoton kuzuna Watarase nanoni

7th place (five-way tie): Yori, from Yori-kun to Yori wo Modosu wake ni wa!; Kaya, from Spring Storm and Monster; Hana, from Hana-kun Can’t Live Without Me; Akira, from Stomp, Kick, Love; Hak, from Yona of the Dawn

8th place: Ren, from Mi wo Kogasu hodo no Ai wo Shire; Chigira, from And Yet, You are so Sweet; Kai, from Honey Lemon Soda

No votes: Farhad, from Kon’yakusha wa Dekiai no Furi; Banri, from Thank You For Taking Care of Our Boy Banri

Honestly, I’m very surprised by some of the lower ranked men! I was expecting some of the sweeter characters (Hak, Chigira, Hananoi) to rank higher. Also, again, why is Hades so low!? He deserves more love!

The most wanted women

The voters were much more sure of who they wanted to award the title of “most wanted woman” to. You all voted for…

Tohru, from Fruits Basket

She won by a landslide! Let’s see where the rest of our female leads sit in the rankings.

2nd place: Hina, from Otaku Vampire’s Love Bite

3rd place (tie): Momose, from Glasses with a Chance of Delinquent; Satoko, from Firefly Wedding

4th place (three-way tie): Nanami, from Kamisama Kiss; Risa, from Love, That’s an Understatement; Hibari, from Choking on Love

5th place (three-way tie): Colette, from Colette Decides to Die; Ichika, from Isso, Anata ga Todome wo Sashite; Otogi, from Fall in Love you False Angels

6th place (three-way tie): Anne from Sugar Apple Fairy Tale; Kikyo, from Oshiete, Shitsuji-kun; Nagi, from The Failure at God School

7th place (tie): Francesca, from Reincarnated in a Mafia Dating Sim; Hotaru, from A Condition Called Love

8th place (tie): Rose, from Hi, I’m a Witch, and My Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion; Mizuka, from Shiokaze to Ryuu no Sumika

9th place: Yona, from Yona of the Dawn

And that’s the ranking! I wasn’t really surprised about the women’s rankings, as who doesn’t love Tohru!? Hina would be a great galentines date, as she would absolutely know about all the fun cafe collaborations taking place.
