Where to read Manga and Manhwa online

While I typically prefer reading manga physically whenever possible, sometimes your only option is to read things online. Reading online comes with its perks—you don’t have to pay for shipping, you don’t have to find room on your shelf, and apps typically remember where you last stopped reading.

As I try and save money whenever possible, I have worked to find websites and apps that have a variety of “payment” methods. Be they with your time (wait to read), coins (read these stories to make coins, and use the coins to buy any chapter), or money.

English Manga Websites

K Manga

K Manga is Kodansha’s official English website / app, and offers a wide variety of manga to read. While most first chapters of the manga offered on the site are free to read, after that you can choose to pay with coins or money. There are many different ways to accumulate coins, so you can read without having to spend any money! If you want to binge something though, I do recommend being ready to spend a little cash.

K Manga also allows readers to send fan mail to authors—something I highly recommend doing if you have a series you enjoy!

Here are some K Manga series that I enjoy, and would highly recommend checking out:

VIZ Manga

VIZ Media actually has two popular manga apps and websites: VIZ Manga, and Shounen Jump. Personally, I enjoy the variety of series found on VIZ Manga just a little bit more, but both are absolutely worth checking out.

A subscription to VIZ Manga will cost you $1.99 a month, but will give you complete access to the entire library. If you are looking for a free version, the first and last three of any given chapters of a series are always free to read.

Here are a few series found on VIZ Manga that I think are worth checking out:

Manga Plus by Shueisha

Manga Plus is both a website and app brought to us by Shueisha, a Japanese manga publishing company. This is one instance where I would highly recommend downloading the app. Why: while you can read the 3 earliest and 3 latest chapters of any given series on the website for free, everything is completely free to read on the app.

While this is a website / app that mostly offers shounen and seinen manga, that doesn’t mean that women can’t also enjoy it!

Here are some titles I believe are worth giving a read:

English Manhwa Websites

Tapas

Tapas has been my go-to app for reading manhwa since I can remember. While they also have a website, I feel like the vertical-scroll style of manhwa work best on a phone or tablet.

Not just manwha though, Tapas also allows you to read light novels! It’s a very handy website.

There are a few different options when it comes to gaining access to the comics: You can wait to read (24h, 48h, 72h) a majority of any given series. You cannot wait to read an entire series unfortunately, as usually the most recent ~20 chapters do not allow this feature. To read the non-eligible chapters, you must use coins. Coins can be gained in a few different ways: you can buy them with your own money, you can do certain tasks that award coins, and you can wait until you are gifted coins once a week. Certain series’s will also randomly gift readers with free-to-read passes. I wouldn’t count on these passes to get you through an entire series, though they are nice to get a little extra reading in.

Thankfully, the first 1~10 chapters of any given series are free to read, so you can really get a feel for whether you want to continue reading a story or not.

Here are a few series that I love and would highly recommend checking out:
