Hope You’re Happy, Lemon / クソ女に幸あれ, Chapter One Manga Review

After his middle school girlfriend casually admitted to cheating on him with 3 other boys and broke up with him, Sunao has been somewhat traumatized. Many years later as he’s still trying to move on, that very ex-girlfriend makes a re-appearance in his life. If that alone wasn’t enough to shake him, the very next morning, he wakes up in her body.

What’s this manga about? (Chapter 1 spoilers)

When he was in middle school, our protagonist Sunao was dating his childhood friend, Lemon. Things seemed to be going very well, so when she casually brought up the fact that she was cheating on him with 3 other boys, he was rather shocked. So shocked, that the betrayal still haunts him in his university years.

He is finally able to find a woman he was interested in enough to try dating again, when Lemon makes a re-appearance in his life. It looks like they are living in the same apartment complex, so they’ll most likely be seeing a lot of each other from here on out. While Sunao is completely aghast at the sight of Lemon, Lemon is very excited to see him—seemingly forgetting the fact that she cheated on him all those years ago.

Later that evening, the two of them make a wish on the same shooting star, and go to bed. The next morning, they both realized they’ve switched bodies! While Lemon seems to be not at all fazed by this new development, the same can’t be said for Sunao. As they’re both busy University students, the two have no choice but pretend to be the other for the time being.

During this time, Sunao is surprised to learn just how popular Lemon is at her university—one of the top universities in the area, at that. He at first assumes she is still dating a number of people at the same time and that’s why she’s so popular, but it’s quickly revealed that she’s actually single, and is just loved by her peers.

It seems like Sunao’s initial understanding of Lemon seems to be flawed. Hopefully being forced to live in her body will allow him to get a better understanding of who she is now. Maybe the truth about what actually caused them to break up all those years ago will come to light as well.

My thoughts (spoilers)

I initially wasn’t going to read this series as I typically am not a fan of shounen romances. Once I learned that it was a body-swapping story, I got a little too curious and decided to sample it. I think it’s safe to say that I will be continuing this one!

While I do find Sunao to be rather bland as a protagonist, I think Lemon carries the story more than enough. I’m excited to watch Sunao be forced to live as Lemon, and to slowly understand her as a person more and more. I’m curious about what caused the break up in the first place, as Lemon reveals to the audience that she didn’t actually cheat on him. She claims she said it because she just liked him too much but… That’s really can’t be the full story, right? I really don’t see the logic between feeling “I really like you” and saying “btw I cheated on you”. Maybe he did something to her that caused her to want to hurt him back? That’s just my speculation.

I enjoyed the added drama of Sunao’s new love interest just so happening to be Lemon’s roommate, however, I’m not sure how I feel about him living with her while in Lemon’s body. I’m praying that this story is kept tasteful, as I think it would thrive on just the drama alone.

If Sunao and Lemon were to return to their bodies the very next day, would Sunao still have an interest in this new girl, I wonder? Now that he knows she’s friends with Lemon, that has to complicate things, right?

I’m just full of questions at this point…
