Hana-kun Can’t Live without Me / ヒモクズ花くんは死にたがり – Volume Two Manga Review

As crazy as he is, Hana is a surprisingly good ally when he wants to be. Now that he has a somewhat established relationship with Kaede, he’s not going to let anyone get between them—be they family or coworker.

You can check out volume two of this series for yourself below!

My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)

This series gets more and more toxic with every chapter, and I’m living for it. In this volume we learn a little more about Kaede, and exactly 2 things about Hana—much to his dismay. Hana is as obsessive as ever, and at this point I’ve learned to not question his actions. His jealousy clearly knows no bounds, as even when Kaede’s brother comes to see her, Hana can only see him as an obstacle. That whole piercing scene after the two met again? It felt as though it was almost a punishment for Kaede—how dare she have room in her heart for someone besides Hana?

The more Kaede realizes she knows nothing about Hana, the more she wants to know. I feel like that’s a very human need in a normal setting, but Kaede isn’t in a normal setting, now is she? Hana had lived with her for a while, bought the apartment next to hers, and behaves oddly whenever someone tries to get close to her. She should have been a lot more upfront and inquisitive about his past and intentions a long time ago. Better late than never, I guess.

In this volume, we watch as Kaede follows Hana to some sketchy looking ally…and continues following him!? For someone as timid as Kaede, I had to applaud her here. She’s doing what it takes to get some long anticipated information, even if it means having to deal with some sketchy people. Eventually when she does catch up with Hana, we are introduced to a very interesting new character—side note, just how does this author make almost every male character both attractive and intimidating?

When Kaede is finally presented with the right opportunity, she states her case: she really really needs to know… if Hana is a legal adult. The girl could have asked anything, and she asked that. Thankfully we were finally gifted two pieces of information about him here, through his new mysterious friend. It’s clear that Hana really did not want Kaede to find out anything about him, but I don’t think he’s all that upset at her newly found knowledge.

Where will Kaede and Hana’s relationship go from here? I’m really not sure. While things do feel somewhat romantic between the two, there is always a threatening undertone coming from Hana. Should the two start actually dating, I couldn’t see it ending peacefully.

My favourite parts of this volume (spoilers)

💛 The art—I’ll talk about this forever. This series has some of my favourite art in all of shoujo manga, the author is just so talented.

💚 Hana tagging along to Kaede’s work trip!! He actually felt like a good boyfriend for a little while here?

💙 Hana’s ability to just pop up no matter where Kaede goes. He’s most definitely hidden a tracker somewhere in her purse.

❤️ That mysterious man who saved Kaede in the alleyway, and then offered to bandage her up!? This better not be the last we see of him.

💙 Hana offering (threatening) to kill everyone in the alleyway after learning that Kaede got a little hurt.

💚 THE BARTENDERRRRR. HE NEEDS HIS OWN SPIN OFF! THE BANTER! THE PONYTAIL!
