My thoughts on this volume (Spoilers!)
After finishing this volume I was left so confused—why was just about every newly introduced character so cruel? Just about everyone Anne and the fairies meet on the road, be they innkeeper or potential customer, treat Anne terribly. It got to a point that I was wondering if Anne didn’t commit some atrocious crime off page. After a while I came to realize that everyone was behaving terribly just because they could, and I got frustrated with Anne for forgiving them all.
While it’s a good trait to be able to “kill them with kindness”, I don’t believe that everyone can be killed with kindness. Some can only be killed by sword—Challe’s sword, to be exact. I began getting frustrated when Challe finally tried to step in, and Anne stopped him. Why did she allow herself to get stepped on throughout the entire volume!?
We do meet some repeat characters in this volume—some kind, some awful. The kind ones really bring about the magic of this series, all of them teaching Anne something new. It was touching to see them all see the potential in Anne, and it’s here that Anne’s kindness really pays off. It’s because she’s so kind that those with the ability to help her, do. I just think she needs to be more careful with who she treats kindly. Some people will step all over you until there’s nothing left to step on, and I think she needs to learn this sooner than later.
Her kindness and wanting to trust people leaves her in an absolutely terrible position come the end of this volume, and while she can’t be blamed for what happened, I honestly found myself frustrated with her. She learnt first-hand just how cruel the man was in volumes one and two, and still decided to let her guard down around him. She also understands how much the owner of the castle would despise the actions the man did, but she doesn’t report him. Instead, she just gives in and does as she’s told—she had so many options to fight back, and she still gave up right away! I can only hope things are resolved quickly in the next volume…
