Which Yen Press Shoujo Manga Should You Read!?

This is a Maddie-made, just-for-fun quiz that I made! If you’re struggling to find a new shoujo manga to read, why not take my quiz and get a recommendation? All of the series included in this quiz are ongoing, with new releases coming soon!

How to play:

There will be four recommendations that you can get! Please keep track of which answer you agree with the most, (for example, if you get 2 A’s, and 3 B’s, then B will be the letter that you agreed with the most). The letter that you agreed with the most will lead you to your recommendation!

Let’s start!

Question 1

How much of an influence do you want romance to have over the plot of your next read?

A) I don’t mind romance being the motivating factor of the story! I love a solid romance story, especially when it’s sweet and fluffy.

B) I don’t mind romance being a motivating factor, but I don’t want it to be the only factor. I’d prefer to read something with more complex emotions and relationships mixed into the plot.

C) I prefer romance to be a subplot, rather than the main focus. I want to read something with an interesting story, where romance just so happens to occur naturally across the span of however many volumes.

D) I prefer romance to be a subplot, but I want to be reminded of the romantic relationships often. I would like about one chapter a volume where I can get my fix of romance before moving back to the main story.

Question 2

What type of female lead do you want to follow in your next read?

A) I want a lead that stays true to herself, no matter what others think of her. I like characters that fully embrace the things that they like—be they people or objects.

B) I want a lead that is forced to face moral conundrums. I enjoy watching characters navigate complex social situations that most likely wouldn’t happen in an ordinary person’s life.

C) I want a lead that is headstrong and positive no matter the situation. I enjoy following characters that stand up for what they believe in, no matter how scary the situation may be.

D) I want a lead that does genuinely anything she wants to do, just because she can. A villainess, if you would. One who doesn’t hold back for fear of how society would judge her.

Question 3

What type of male lead do you want to follow in your next read?

A) A cool, calm and collected, super-elite knight would be nice. Someone with soft grey hair, and piercing eyes… Someone who would do almost anything to complete what he deems to be in the realm of his knightly duties.

B) Someone equally beautiful and crazy, please. The crazier, the better.

C) I would prefer to not even know who the male lead is until well into the story. I would prefer multiple potential male lead candidates, with the story naturally progressing into romance.

D) Someone who takes an interest in the female lead not because she’s beautiful, but because she’s capable and interesting. I want a romance that I can actually believe in, not something shallow.

Question 4

Which simplified plot sounds most interesting to you?

A) A witch puts a knight through hell when he requests something of her, just so she can spend more time with him.

B) Two teengers find themselves step-siblings-adjacent when their guardians get married. She sees him as her troublesome new step-brother, but he sees her as his everything.

C) People are getting spirited away, and the only way to save them all is by going to god school.

D) A girl is given the golden opportunity to antagonize her least favourite character from a dating simulation game.

Question 5

How much influence do you want the side characters to have in the plot?

A) Very minimal to no influence. I would prefer this to be a romance-first read, so I only want to follow the main couple.

B) A lot. I want to read something with very complex relationships and emotions, so I want there to be many outside influences.

C) A lot. I want to read something with an interesting cast of characters. I enjoy series where the female lead has many friends and antagonists that are relevant to her journey.

D) Some. While I want the story to mainly focus on the female lead and her journey, it would be boring if she had no interaction with other characters. I want to watch as she makes many friends and enemies along her journey.
