Japanese Vocabulary Using 雨 Beginner Friendly

It’s time for our daily Japanese vocabulary! It’s important to study a little bit every day, so let’s work hard to remember one new word every single day.

Today’s Kanji character we’re going to be focusing on is… 雨!

Please remember that I use a mix of formal and casual Japanese in these posts! I use the type of language often found in shoujo manga.

What does 雨 mean?

雨 is a Kanji character that is read as: あめ・ame. It means rain. Let’s take a look at a few compound words using 雨:



雨天・うてん・uten

Example sentences

English: Tomorrow’s weather forecast is rain.

Romaji only: Ashita no tenkiyohou wa uten desu.

Hiragana only: あした の てんきよほう は うてん です。

Final: 明日の天気予報は雨天です。


English: On the account of rain, the summer festival will be canceled.

Romaji only: Uten no baai wa, natsumatsuri wa chuushi to narimasu.

Hiragana only: うてん の ばあい は、なつまつり は ちゅうし と なります。

Final: 雨天の場合は、夏祭りは中止となります。


雨具・あまぐ・amagu

Example sentences

English: If you’re going to go out during April, it would be best to bring some rain gear.

Romaji only: Shigatsu wa soro nin dekaketara, amagu wo motteitta hou ga ii to omou.

Hiragana only: しがつ は そと に でかけたら、あまぐ を もっていった ほう が いい と おもう。

Final: 4月は外に出かけたら、雨具を持って行った方がいいと思う。


English: Speaking of rain gear, it’s things like umbrellas, boots, and jackets, right.

Romaji only: Amagu to ieba, kasa toka, bu-tsu toka, jaketto da yo ne.

Hiragana only: あまぐ と いえば、かさ とか、ブーツ とか、ジャケット だ よ ね。

Final: 雨具といえば、傘とか、ブーツとか、ジャケットだよね。


雷雨・らいう・raiu

Example sentences

English: I dislike thunderstorms.

Romaji only: Watashi wa raiu ga nigate desu.

Hiragana only: わたし は らいう が にがて です。

Final: 私は雷雨が苦手です。


English: There are many thunderstorms in the summer…

Romaji only: Natsu wa raiu ga ooi yo ne…

Hiragana only: なつ は らいう が おおい よ ね。。。

Final: 夏は雷雨が多いよね。。。
