What does Omoide 思い出 mean in Japanese?

In today’s post, I thought it would be fun to break down this manga panel together!

** For this post, you need to be able to read hiragana and katakana as I won’t be providing romaji readings**

This picture is from volume three of the manga “ふたりじめロマンチック” You can check it out for yourself here!

Word Bank

  • そりゃ・that is (conjugation of それは)
  • あの・that
  • 思い出・おもいで・memory
  • 私・わたし・I / me
  • にとって・to (me); for (me); from (my perspective)
  • 特別・とくべつ・special

Let’s get translating!

The speech bubble says:

そりゃ あの思い出は私にとって特別な。。。って

As this is a longer sentence, we’ll have to break it down a little bit in order to fully understand it.

1

そりゃ

  • This is a very casual way of saying “それは”. It’s being said in response to someone else not seen in this panel.
  • It gives ease into the next part of the sentence. Kind of like a buffer, or some padding.

We can translate it into English as something like “that is…

2

あの思い出は

  • あの is a noun marker. We use it together with a noun to mean “that ~”.
  • 思い出 means memory in English. Combining it with あの, it means “that memory”, or “あの思い出”.
  • は is a particle that means “is”.

So, putting everything together, this part of the sentence can be translated as “that memory is…

3

私にとって

  • 私 is a pronoun, meaning “I”, or “me”. It’s a gender neutral word.
  • にとって shows perspective.

We can translate this part of the sentence as “for me“, “according to me“, or “from my viewpoint“.

4

特別な。。。って

  • 特別 is a noun, or な adjective that means “special”.
  • な is a particle that can show longing or happiness.
  • ってis a quotation marker, but it’s not really being used to quote directly here! Instead, it’s being used to explain a remark made earlier in the manga (not shown here.)

We can translate this part of the sentence as “Special~“.

Summarizing

Putting everything together, let’s translate the sentence completely!

Original: そりゃ あの思い出は私にとって特別な。。。って
Translation: That is.. That memory is important to me…is all.
