What’s this manga about?

After being duped by his friend, Subaru’s father found himself in a tremendous amount of debt. So much debt, that both he and his wife needed to flee to Tokyo for a while, leaving Subaru by herself. As she had to apply and be accepted into her high school, she couldn’t exactly just leave with her parents. So, they set her up in an apartment close to her school, and took off.

Now, just 15 years old, Subaru finds herself living alone the day before starting high school. While she’s not exactly all that capable, she’s full of enthusiasm—which is half the battle, right? Just as she’s leaving to buy groceries for her new apartment, she runs into a strange handsome man, who just so happened to have already done her grocery shopping for her. He introduces himself as Hikari, the landlord’s son. He’s also just 15 years old, and really likes helping take care of others. Especially Subaru for some reason.

Subaru, having just watched her dad be duped out of all her money, sees Hikari’s kind gestures as suspicious, and tries to shut him out. Even after running into him at school, and being invited out with him and him classmates, she tries to keep a distance from him. It isn’t until a certain event happens that she finally lets her guard down, and confesses to him about how she’s been living on her own (not very well). He then decides that if anything, he need to be more intrusive in her life, and promises to teach her all the life skills that she will need while she lives on her own.

What I Like About This Manga

💜 Subaru clearly seeing her dad in Hikari, leading to her seeing him as an enemy right from the get go—if it wasn’t for this, I think I would have found her to be needlessly standoffish. I really liked that we were given an explanation for her behaviour right at the start.

💙 Hikari literally being a little ball of sunshine.

💚 Hikari’s reaction to Subaru when she told him all she was eating at home was little energy bars!! The poor boy was at his breaking point.

💛 Subaru’s family clearly staying in constant contact with Hikari’s parents—all too often we see nothing about character’s parents, so I liked the reinforcement that she was not abandoned.

💚 Hikari’s little self-help talk about what it takes to improve yourself—literally he’s so cute.

💙 Hikari catching Subaru as she was trying to climb her way back into her apartment after losing her key. I would have diiiiied from the embarrassment if she were me.
