Is working in proximity to your favourite actor truly all it’s cracked up to be? Or is it really better to just admire them from afar?

What’s this series about?

When depicted on the big screen, Banri is the ideal boyfriend. He’s kind, pays attention to his surroundings, and knows how to read the room. So of course, our main character Nanase dreams of one day being able to work with him—what could be better than meeting your idol, right? The opportunity comes quicker than expected, as one day her older sister asks her to work as his manager for just one month—as an interim manager.

Nanase is a university student currently on her summer break, so the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. She wants to follow in her sisters footsteps, to one day also work behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. It doesn’t hurt that she was asked to work with the Banri—the idealistic boyfriend. Nanase goes as far as imagining herself and Banri getting into a romantic relationship come the end of their one-month work contract.

Her dreams sadly come crashing down when she actually comes face to face with Banri. Though he has the same dreamy face as the boy she watched on tv, that’s the only resemblance. The real Banri actually has a terrible personality—a well known secret within his company—and only puts on the sweet act while working. As no one wants to work with him, the only one left to do the job is Nanase. While her dreams of potentially dating Banri quickly go out the window, she has no choice but to learn to get along with him for the next month.

My thoughts on this volume

I will admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of this series at first… but as Banri and Nanase’s relationship developed, I was able to see its charm. In the first chapter, I found Banri to be just a little too over-the-top mean. He constantly insulted Nanase for seemingly no good reason, and went as far as telling her the only time she needed to speak was to say either “yes” or “woof” in reply to him. Like, what is that?

Thankfully his over-the-top rudeness is quickly toned down, and Nanase is able to match his rude attitude to a certain degree. Because she doesn’t just sit down and take his abuse but instead call him out for it, their dynamic quickly became very interesting to me! While it first it felt like an actor abusing his new manager (power harassment), it quickly developed into two friends arguing.

While Banri does stay rude the entire time, we are shown that he isn’t necessarily a bad person—he just has a bad personality. We learn a little bit about his ambitions and work ethic, and we also get a glimpse into a potential reason he is so mean to managers when they first come in. It’s with this character development that I was able to really appreciate Banri as a character, and I was able to see him as a good counter to Nanase.

I also was very intrigued by the villain actor who made an appearance at the very end of the volume. I think he actually may have been my favourite character in this volume, just because of how devious and sneaky was. The Kansai-Ben also didn’t hurt my affection meter.

My favourite parts of this volume (spoilers)

💛 Nanase literally taking out the scummy paparazzi—she’s surprisingly really athletic?

💚 When it’s revealed why Banri was making Nanase go all over the city to do seemingly random tasks (he’s not doing it to just punish her)

💙 Nanase just casually whipping out her motorcycle, allowing them to beat traffic and make it to set—she’s such a film nerd I love her.

❤️ When Banri finally slightly lowers his guard against Nanase—it shows his really mean personality may just be a front he puts up to protect himself!

💙 Reiji trying to pawn Nanase off, causing Banri to get angry jealous…causing his acting to suddenly improve.
