What’s this series about?

In this world, rather than humans, there are angels with beautiful wings. We follow our main character Misora on her quest to improve herself, and gain a coveted halo before she graduates high school. For reasons she tries to keep close to her chest, she needs to stay as diligent as possible, and is always careful with behaving as a proper angel should.

One of her teachers takes note of her diligence, and makes a request of her—join the student council, and help the members get back on the right track. It just so happens that all five members of the council have a vice that they just can’t let go of: greed, gluttony, wrath, lust, and sloth. All that’s missing is pride and envy. In exchange for her help, her teacher promises to help Misora get her halo, and so of course, she accepts.

Misora isn’t the only angel that joined the council to help though, as the beautiful transfer student Kanade is also there by request of staff. While at first he comes off as a rather standoffish angel, he is soon revealed to actually just be incredibly shy. Misora ends up being the first one able to break through his shyness, earning his friendship…and obsession.

Misora quickly learns that Kanade has a vice of his own—envy. If he isn’t careful about regulating these feelings, he very well may become a fallen angel. So, Misora has taken it upon herself to try and help Kanade make more friends. It could help him be a little less obsessive when it comes to Misora, right?

My thoughts on this volume

The first chapter of this volume kind of gave me “Ousama wa Ano Ko ni Muchuu” vibes. Both stories follow a friendless female lead trying to have a good year, eventually taken in by the members of their respective student councils. That’s where the similarities end, with Koi Suru Tenshi going a more supernatural route. We also have the introduction of Kanade, who is an outsider of the core student council, allowing him to be just a little bit closer to Misora than anyone else.

I found Misora’s character to be interesting, with her wings being just a smidge darker than everyone else’s due to her personal circumstances. The concept of an angel’s wings turning dark when they feel undesirable emotions was certainly interesting for me, but I’m worried about where it will go from here. I don’t feel the wing colouring system was explained all that thoroughly in this volume, with just bad emotions = dark wings = may fall. Is there a certain time before an angel actually falls? Does the darkening happen in steps? What exactly are the “undesirable” emotions? I have more questions than answers, so all I can do is read on.

Because of how easy it is for these characters to fall, I worry that there won’t be all that much romance in this series. I’m okay with this, as I find the world to be very unique and fun! I have a feeling that the story will continue to center around Misora as she tries to “correct” those close to her, without getting swept up herself.

My favourite parts of this volume (spoilers)

💛 Kanade’s wings flapping whenever he feels excited—he’s just a big puppy who needs to be protected.

💚 The angel of sloth being revealed to have a truly horrible personality when he finally wakes up—I need to be left alone for quite a while after waking up, so I get it.

💙 Kanade being instantly protective of Misora when they finally meet the other members of the council—she doesn’t need any other friends! He’s all she needs!

❤️ Kanade trying to pocket the tamagoyaki Misora offered him when he realized it was handmade—literally disgusting but also so cute.

💙 The entire “taking care of him when he got sick” arc. Literally every romance manga needs one of these.
