Mi wo Kogasu hodo no Ai wo Shite / 身を焦がすほどの愛を知れ – Volume One Manga Review

This is a toxic romance series, following a girl who is in love with one of her childhood friends. While he only sees her as a little sister, his younger brother won’t let anyone get too close to her.

What’s this series about?

When she was very young, Miu’s father left her and her mother. To comfort her, her two neighbours, Ren and Ran, both agree to be there for her from here on out. While Ran promised to be her older brother, Ren promised to one day marry her. Both propositions, while very different, did an equally good job of comforting her.

Miu grew up with Ren and Ran, and now 10 years later, she and Ren are in high school, while Ran is a university student. Since the day he offered to be her older brother, Miu has had feelings for Ran. These feelings seem to be obvious to just about everyone besides Ran, and she wants to finally do something about it.

With the somewhat dubious help of Ren, Miu goes all in to take the next step in the relationship. But, Miu isn’t the only person in this triangle that has feelings. If Ren has anything to say about it, he will be the only person that she can count on when everything’s over.

My thoughts on this volume

I love a good toxic romance, and this was absolutely delicious. Ren is depicted as a playboy, kind of goofy character, but he’s quickly revealed to have a much darker personality. While Miu has had an innocent crush on Ran since they were children, Ren has been unhealthily obsessed with Miu since they were children.

Poor Miu really goes through it in this volume, her emotions being pulled in every which way. I did find Ren to be rather scummy for what he did at the end of chapter one, but I feel like he’ll probably go on to do even worse things.

In his possessiveness for Miu, he does slightly illegal things to keep her safe… while also giving the illusion that he’s actually helping her. While I think he’s a rather terrible person, he makes for a fantastic ML in a toxic romance series. Poor Miu can’t tell if he actually likes her, or if he’s just playing around with her… and he just continues to crank his antics up.

I’m looking forward to continuing this series! I’m curious to see if Miu will indeed fall for Ren, or if Ran will change his mind about her. That cliffhanger had me feeling a certain way…

What I liked most about this volume (spoilers)

❤️ Ren instinctively putting all of his weight on Miu whenever he sees her — I’m not sure why but I find this really cute.

🧡 Ren continuously asking Miu (seemingly seriously) when she’s going to give him a chance, clearly flustering her… and then saying he’s just joking. Of course she’s going to doubt his feelings!!

💛 Ren buying that stuffed animal to comfort Miu (from a situation he created, but still). Like, he’ll accept her for who she is! She doesn’t have to change for him!

💚 Ren bugging Miu’s blind date — it leads me to believe he’s probably been bugging her for a little while now. It came in handy, but also, creepy.

💛 Ren ignoring Miu all day at school after coming onto her really hard at home. And then when she seeks him out, he asks her if she spent the whole day thinking of him. He’s so toxic oh my god.

🧡 Little Ren being scarily happy about eating the first thing Miu every baked — it started at a very early age.
