Kyuuketsuki e Yomeiru Hi / 吸血鬼へ嫁入る日 – Chapter One Manga Review

After borrowing a little too much money, a family is forced to sell one of their daughters to the church. This situation, difficult enough on its own, is made much more stressful when it’s revealed that the pastor is a vampire.

What happens in chapter one?

Though they lived in harmony for many years, eventually their debts caught up to them, and our protagonist, Suzune’s, family found themselves in a difficult spot. The only way out of the hole they found themselves in was to sell one of their two daughters, so they decided on Suzune’s sister, Makie.

The circumstances changed rather quickly, when one day, Suzune went to visit the priest who was behind the idea of one of the sisters being sold. She begged to be able to visit her sister one last time, but all the priest could focus on was the cut on her finger. He attacked her instantly—turns out he was a vampire—causing Suzune to suffer a brutal injury to her back.

She was able to escape, making her way back to her family to report on what just happened to her… but no one believed her. Eventually Suzune was thought to be a cursed child, and she was sold in place of her sister. It seems like everyone just believed her injuries appeared due to a curse, not because anyone actually attacked her.

Now Suzune finds herself working as a servant on a “pleasure district” island. As she’s believed to be cursed, her superiors force her to wear a face covering. She’s treated rather cruelly by seemingly everyone on the island, and is made to do tasks no one else would ever choose to do.

One day an incredibly handsome man comes to visit the island, stirring up all of the workers. It’s thought that he’s looking for someone to sleep with for the night, but could he actually be in search of something more meaningful?

My thoughts on this chapter

Honestly, this chapter fell short of my expectations. I found the vampire priest character to be rather underwhelming, and he never appeared again after attacking Suzune at the start of the chapter. For someone who had such a large effect on her life—he technically bought her and brought her to the island, and he attacked her—he really isn’t all that present.

Once Suzune makes her way to the island, we are shown clearly just how poorly she’s treated. We see her suffering abuse day by day.. and eventually her sister comes to visit her. Does her sister come to check if she’s okay? no. In typical villainess style, her sister came to cause more mayhem in Suzune’s already depressing life. Why was the sister brought back in like this? I would understand if the priest were the one to make a surprise appearance, causing more mayhem in her life. But her sister? What’s her motivation?

I felt like it was a somewhat lazy way to get some drama in the story before the male lead swoops in and makes everything okay. I’m hoping that the story will pick up a bit after that happens, because as of right now, I’m really not invested in this story sadly.
