My thoughts on this volume

Getting my hands on the physical volume one of this manga wasn’t exactly easy. It was out of stock on Amazon, and the used bookstore that I like to use stopped shipping to Canada temporarily. It felt like I was never going to be able to get my hands on it, so, naturally, it became the book I wanted to read the most.

I was a little worried that I had been hyping it up too much in my head during the time that it was out of stock. So, when I was finally able to order it, I was a little bit nervous to open it up. Thankfully, it actually surpassed my expectations! This was a wonderful introduction to the series, and I enjoyed it so much that I might have to read it digitally, chapter by chapter, just to keep up to date.

Hanayagi keeps Kikyou on a string the entire volume, but their relationship is so playful that you really can’t fault him for it. As she crosses the line every time the opportunity is presented, can you really blame him for teasing her a little more than a butler should?

This does cause some stress for Kikyou, as she can never pinpoint his exact feelings. She continuously flip-flops between believing he also likes her, and believing that he doesn’t like her. And with each flip, her mood changes drastically. She’s such an expressive, vibrant character that she makes for the perfect heroine of a shoujo manga. Even though she’s immature, you can’t help but want her to get her happy ending.

After reading this volume, I think it’s safe to say that Yanagi really does actually like Kikyou, but that he also wants the best for her. I have two favourite types of male leads, and he fits one of the categories perfectly: aloof, but secretly caring. He goes beyond what a normal butler should do, and even suggests that she try meeting with some other boys to gain social experience. It’s really not surprising that he was able to win her crazy dad over in such a short span of time.

What I liked most about this volume

Oh my goodness, what didn’t I like about this volume?

❤️ Kikyou’s maid teaching her to grab Yanagi by his collar, and Yanagi finding out almost instantly – it’s really cute to learn more about the different interactions they all have at home! Although the majority of them are working, they really do feel like a family.

🧡 Kikyou not caring and telling just about everyone about how much she loves Yanagi – she knows what she likes, and I respect that for her.

💛 Yanagi telling Kikyou not to cheat on him… causing her to not be able to focus on literally anything for days.

💚 Being shown her delusions – she really is such a funny character!

💛 Yanagi telling Kikyou he’ll fulfil any request she makes of him—literally any request—as a reward for passing her tests, and Kikyou wanting so many things that she ends up not being able to ask for anything.

🧡 Yanagi and Kikyou’s friend really not getting along – I thought it was nice to see her friend try to stand up for her! Watching Kikyou struggle because she doesn’t know if he likes her back or not must be frustrating.

❤️ Yanagi at university!! In normal clothes!! I’m not sure why, but I was surprised to learn that he’s a university student.

🧡 Kikyou’s dad, at the request of Yanagi, setting up a matchmaking-type event for Kikyou… and then turning down literally all of the men for the smallest reason.

💛 What Yanagi said to Kikyou when she asked him why he recommended the matchmaking event!! Rough translation: “You’ve told me you like me enough times that it’s burned into my brain. So, I don’t mind if you go somewhere else. I trust that you’ll come back in the end. After all, it’s when you’re with me that you’re the happiest, right?”
