3 Shoujo Witch Manga Series You Should Read

I read quite a few fantasy series in October, and I realized that I actually own quite a few witchy series! While I have a rather large variety of demographics, I wanted to talk about my favourite shoujo witch manga series. Have you read any of them?


Gin no Mugibatake / 銀の麦畑

Some info about this manga

  • This is a fantasy series, about witches who grow wheat with their magic.
  • There is infighting between two classes of witches: gold witches, and silver witches.
  • The female lead Mei is kind and brave, and ends up turning herself into a witch to save her friend.
  • There is currently only a Japanese version of this series.

A quick recap

A very long time ago, the soil of a certain kingdom was completely barren. Just as the residents were beginning to starve, the Gold Magicians appeared. They injected their magic into the soil, allowing crops to flourish. Just as gold ran through the veins of these Gold Magicians, the wheat that grew from the soil came up golden.

Ever since the appearance of these Gold Magicians, a harvest festival has been held to honour them every year. One event at the festival is a baking competition, where young bakers turn the golden wheat into delicious foods. This year, our protagonist Mei came in second place, earning her a curious silver wheat brooch…. Read on here!


Sekai de Ichiban Warui Majo / 世界で一番悪い魔女

Some info about this manga

  • This is a fantasy series, about a girl who stole the identity of the “worst witch in the world”.
  • She is hired as a bodyguard for a scholar, and they travel together so that he can submit his research.
  • The have a playful/teasing relationship.
  • There is currently only a Japanese version of this series.

A quick recap

One day, a mysterious man fell out of the sky. As our main character, Quinta, is a witch, she is able to save him on his way down.
We quickly learn that this man, Gilroy, is a professor who is being chased by witches after his research. His newest findings are so profound that they can turn any witch incredibly powerful, so those after him claim.

Our main character, Quinta, doesn’t really care about him, however he attaches himself to her in order to be saved. We then quickly learn more about Quinta: she is the infamous 300 year old witch, who is known to kill other witches. She also has a larger-than-life magical beast, much stronger than the average beast that accompany witches… Read on here!


Hi, I’m a Witch, and My Crush Wants Me to Make a Love Potion / どうも、好きな人に惚れ薬を依頼された魔女です

Some info about this manga

  • This is a fantasy series, about a shut-in witch and her one-sided crush.
  • He wants her to make him a love potion, and she does everything she can to prolong the creation process.
  • This is a slow burn series.
  • This is currently being published in both English and Japanese!

A quick recap

This volume, as the first volume of all manga do, introduces us to out main characters, as well as the world of the manga. We learn that in this world witches and magic do exists, but only to a certain degree. Rather than create spells, witches are gifted with the ability to make extraordinary potions. This gift comes with a price, however – they are unable to tell lies…Read on here!
