My thoughts on this volume

I’ll be honest, I was a little bit apprehensive about this series. It was first recommended to me by some friends on Discord, them telling me that it would surely satiate my craving for a new horror series. In the end, they were absolutely right.

There were two main reasons that I was apprehensive to start this series: it’s a BL, and it contains vore. I absolutely don’t have anything against BL, but I tend to only actually enjoy about 10% of the BL media that I consume. It looks like I’m more particular to the horror-BL subgenre, as I have yet to meet a horror BL that I didn’t enjoy (looking at you, Killing Stalking). As for the vore aspect—I’ve never read anything containing cannibalism. The idea really grossed me out, but in the end, it actually really fit Makoto’s character.

The two characters we see most in this volume, Makoto and J, are both rounded out to a surprising degree. When first introduced to them, I understood Makoto to be a somewhat pitiful boy, and J to be a somewhat silly demon. As we follow them along their journey, they both are fleshed out more and more. While Makoto is indeed somewhat pitiful, he’s actually a lot more twisted than even some of the demons. And while J can be silly, he’s actually a lot more clever and evil than I expected.

As J takes Makoto on as his pet, I was constantly intrigued by their new relationship. I was never able to ascertain exactly how Makoto was feeling, as while he seemed to be very upset with his new life, he was also becoming accustomed to it at a concerning speed.

Things I particularly enjoyed

❤️ Makoto admitting that he was willing to fully give up his life in exchange for a beautiful demon if J happened to be ugly when they first met.

🧡 Makoto’s constant struggle with his compulsions – honestly I do think it’s a good thing for the human world that he left. On the other hand, I do feel a little bit bad for him now that he’s in the demon world.

💛 Dog-body Makoto – I feel like J did this just to mess with him, if I’m being honest.

💚 Makoto and J’s relationship – I’m enjoying the constant shift in their dynamic! While it’s meant to be “master and servant”, Makoto is clearly evolving at such a speed that it’s not sustainable.

💛 The demon power system – I found it interesting that demons can’t say the names of demons that are more powerful than them. Also, that they don’t know they can’t say the names until they try to.

🧡 Makoto slowly becoming more and more demon-like as the volume processes.
