What happens in chapter one?

Asuka was raised by an incredibly strong mom, in an incredibly bad neighbourhood. In order to survive, both women had to be tough as nails, leading them to become somewhat feared by the local troublemakers.

After getting into a fight and sustaining rather serious injuries one day, Asuka finds herself responsible for her mom’s medical bills. Not having a lot of money, her mom is stuck in the hospital until Asuka can get the funds.

Thinking on her feet, Asuka vows to marry a rich husband as quickly as she can and pay for her mom’s surgery.

So, she quickly gets to work on bettering herself. She studies day and night, practices speaking eloquently, and tries to give up fighting. All of her hard work does pay off, as she’s accepted into a prestigious school, where she quickly gains a respectable name for herself.

She joins the student council, and is admired by most of the boys in her school. Not just the boys, one of the higher ups also thinks fondly of her and asks her if she would like to become engaged to his grandson. His grandson being the ever-adored student council president.

Not long after Asuka accepts the proposal though, the boy, Shion, runs away. She’s able to find him rather quickly, but he looks like a completely new person—a yankee. She tries to persuade him to go back home—if he doesn’t go home soon, his grandfather will annul the engagement—but he says he won’t go home until he can do everything he’s been wanting to do.

It turns out that the life of an incredibly wealthy boy isn’t all that easy. Growing up he’s always done what’s been expected of him, and he always stayed away things that would displease his family. If he accepts the engagement to Asuka, then it will be like he’s living his whole life according to the wishes of those around him.

So, before he agrees to the engagement, he first wants to experience some freedom. And he wants Asuka to tag along with him, completing a list-full of things a rich heir could never do.

My thoughts on this chapter

I love a good yankee story, and this one put a fun spin on things! I find stories with a female lead yankee character to be few and far between. I really don’t understand why, as seen with this story, they make for very entertaining protagonists!

While at school, both Asuka and Shion play the “good student”, hiding their true selves. While Asuka was rather forced into the yankee life, Shion idealizes it. His version of what a yankee should be comes directly from manga, as Asuka quickly understands that he is literally in cosplay when in “yankee mode”. At first I found this to be a little bit silly, but this part of him quickly grew to be cute to me.

As he’s never really been able to have his own sense of identity, of course he wouldn’t know exactly how to dress when given the opportunity. I can’t say that I haven’t also subtly cosplayed a character whose style I liked back in high school.
