What happens in chapter one?
After being pushed by her husband, hitting her head, and falling unconscious, the villainess of this story has her body taken over by our main character. Waking up to the sight of a beautiful man checking on her, Ilse is a little bit lost, but not all that upset. It’s only after he tells her not to speak to him if she really doesn’t need him that she begins to clue in that something’s wrong.
She returns to her room where she checks her situation in more detail, and eventually calls on a maid to fill her in on the details. She understands that she’s entered the body of a book character, and that this character is a villainess. What she doesn’t understand is exactly where she is in the story, and what evil deeds she’s done thus far. Rather than confess that she’s just transmigrated into the body of their master, she instead tells them that her earlier fall has caused her some memory loss. Her maid believes her and fills her in.
We learn that Ilse has incredibly powerful healing magic, and that she used this power to manipulate people to her liking. She took great interest in the male lead, Gilbert, forcing him to marry her in exchange for saving his mother. So while she’s married, he absolutely hates her.
Ilse, having read the book, has a general understanding of all the characters. She knows that her husband has someone that he’s truly in love with; that her brother, though he dotes on her now, will later turn on her when he knows her secret; and that she’s destined to be sold off to a brothel.
Wanting to live a good life, she makes a plan: take advantage of her brother’s kindness while she still has his favour, divorce her husband who clearly hates her, and make money using her healing powers for good.
My thoughts on this chapter
What can I say? I’m a sucker for a pink-haired girl × white-haired guy romance. Hello, I’m A Witch; Horegusuri Event… They tend to be gold!
I thought this chapter did a very good job of introducing the storyline, with there being two main mysteries: “what does the bother know?” and “what curse is Gilbert talking about?”
I feel like the story may move in one direction, with the mysteries being more in the background. Even if I’m wrong, I’m interested enough in the story that I want to follow along and see where it goes.
I found all of the characters introduced in this chapter to be interesting, with Ilse being a good main character! She’s relatable enough that I feel bad for her, but strong enough mentally that I think she’ll be able to make it through. I do think she could be a little bit more proactive—if she’s read the novel, shouldn’t she know how the main villainess acts? While I did find her behaviour to be a little bit unrealistic at times, I amount it to her being confused after entering a new body.
Her brother is the character I’m most interested in! While she claims he’ll abandon her in favour for the female lead once he learns her secret, it’s clear that he’s currently rather obsessed with Ilse.
As for Gilbert, he acts how I imagine a man who was forced to marry a villainess would act. I’m curious to learn more about the “curse” that was placed on him.
