What happens in chapter one?
Kawashima is rather unaccustomed to being close to boys, having only had one boyfriend in her life. After graduating middle school together, the two of them moved on to new high schools, promising to stay together long-distance. He quickly stops replying to Kawashima’s messages after physically separating though, and eventually begins posting about his new girlfriend on social media.
Kawashima is heartbroken.. but there isn’t exactly anything she can do about it. She resolves to somehow make him regret treating her this way, but again, how?
That night, while taking out the garbage, a handsome stranger happens to save her from a few falling boards. This handsome stranger just so happens to be her quiet, glasses-wearing classmate, Mizuma. Only, without the glasses. Somehow, with the glasses, he’s a nerdy bookworm; without the glasses, he’s unbelievably good-looking.
Kawashima quickly takes advantage of his kindness and asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend for just one night. She explains her (now) ex-boyfriend problems to him, and because he’s an incredibly kind person, he agrees.
So, she takes him back to her hometown, hoping that her ex will see the two of them together and get jealous. Even though they’re only pretend dating though, Kawashima gets very flustered at literally everything Mizuma does—he’s just that attractive. By the end of the date, she’s more upset about her previous relationship being over than anything, but she is able to bring herself to send her ex one final goodbye. Finally closing the door on their relationship, and potentially opening the door for something new.
My thoughts on this chapter
This is actually my second time sampling this series! I skimmed it first, decided that I didn’t like it, and forgot about it for a few months. When I saw Pixiv had that first chapter up for free today I decided to give it another chance, and I liked it much more the second time around!
I do have to say that it’s not my favourite Dessert series ever, but I do think it has its charm! Both leads have their own problems that they need to deal with: he lacks confidence, she becomes very flustered around boys. While I found his “problem” much more tolerable than hers, I didn’t find myself disliking either character this time around.
While their relationship started on a strange request, I am hopeful that it will grow from here. I am a little bit worried that the story will involve Kawashima taking advantage of Mizuma’s kindness and the fact that no one knows he’s attractive (yet?). I just hope that it moves in a good direction from here!
