What happens in chapter one?
Sae is a woman who has a strong sense of conviction. She wants to help others in their day-to-day lives… whether they want that help or not. As her intentions come from a good place, her help is generally accepted… but sometimes she can be a little bit pushy. This pushiness shows the most in her romantic relationships, unfortunately.
After dating a man for quite a while, she took it upon herself to draft up a marriage contract for the two of them. She did this to take initiative, thinking it could help move their relationship along… but to him, they were just friends with benefits. Sae became very confused when he told her that they weren’t dating, and rather than just accept it and move on, she insisted he tell her exactly why he doesn’t see her as his girlfriend. While this also came from a good place – she wanted to learn and improve herself – all it really did was cause the poor man stress.
So, after getting dumped, she decides that maybe it would be better for her to gain some experience dealing with men who are paid to talk to her. She downloads an app that allows women to meet men for money, matches with Tarou, and sets to go on a coffee date with him.
This advice ends up having the opposite effect on Tarou, as instead, it causes him to drop his cute and innocent act, revealing him to actually be a rather crass, blunt person. He begins lecturing her in turn, telling her that just because she feels that she’s always right, doesn’t mean that she is.
Now that their relationship has changed a little bit, Sae drags Tarou over to a bar so that she can share the real reason she met up with him in the first place.
My thoughts about this chapter
While I didn’t really like Sae’s character at first, I grew to like her more after watching her interact with Tarou. She really does come off as an annoying character at times, and I really didn’t feel all that much pity for her when her “boyfriend” was revealed to actually just be a friend with benefits. I really liked watching Tarou call her out on her negative traits, as she really does need to learn to stop lecturing and demanding information from people…
In terms of pacing, I really enjoy the way that the story is being told! At first, I was rather confused as to why a character like her would look for a paid relationship with someone. When it’s revealed it’s because she’s lonely after a breakup, it all made a lot more sense. I’m excited to see where the story goes, as it’s clear from the start that Tarou has been manipulating her to get something, but what that something is, I’m still not sure. It would make sense if he just wanted money, but I feel like he’s probably looking for a free house to live in.
What I liked most about this chapter
🧡 The art style – I really like how expressive the art is! It adds a little bit of silliness to what’s technically a rather dark story.
💛 The moment Tarou drops the innocent façade and his actual personality comes out. I really enjoy a manipulative male lead in stories like this, and I feel like he’s going to be a lot of fun to follow.
🧡 The very last page of the chapter, where Sae eventually gives in and invites Tarou over to her house… And he just says “woof” in reply.
