My thoughts about this volume

I think this was a strong continuation of volume one! Our trio of characters has been set, and I am pretty confident that all three will be sticking around for the next little while.

This volume can be split into three sections: continuing off from the previous volume, the confession tree, and the exorcist siblings. Personally, I enjoyed the confession tree the most, but I think all three were very strong! The previous volume ended in a very interesting way, and I have a feeling that the method they used to defeat her will be the method they use to defeat all of the other mysteries that they come up against.

I was a little confused by the exorcist siblings arc, but I think the confusion will go away once I learn more about Hanako’s past. I enjoyed the two siblings’ dynamic, and it was very nice to see the younger brother stand up for what he believes in! While everything ended smoothly in this volume, I can see the older brother coming back as a villain in the near future.

My favourite part of this volume

A new mystery popped up at the school, but Nene is a little too preoccupied to actually understand the repercussions that it brings. Her best friend tells her the rumours surrounding the mystery: if someone confesses their love underneath the massive tree in the courtyard, they will absolutely become a couple. Nene thinks it’s sweet, but again, is too preoccupied to really understand that it could be something supernatural.

A little while later, Hanako explains that he wants to meet Nene under the tree. While he clearly wants to investigate the new phenomenon, Nene strongly believes that he’s going to confess to her. While she talks to herself about how he’s really not her type at all, she’s very excited about the idea of being confessed to.

The two of them meet under the tree, and Hanako does indeed confess his feelings for her. When she doesn’t reply, he whispers to her to quickly turn him down. Confused, she follows suit, leading to the tree-monster exposing itself. The tree is actually a supernatural being that forces romantic feelings upon those who turn down confessions under it.

Hanako is able to easily defeat it once it shows its face… But Nene is incredibly distraught at the fact that her very first confession was a pretend one. She clearly feels some type of way about Hanako, which just makes the fact it was a pretend confession that much worse. Upon realizing that he actually hurt her feelings, Hanako awkwardly apologizes to Nene.

This was just such a sweet scene! It shows just how close the two of them have gotten since volume one, but that they don’t actually really know each other all that well yet. It was also nice to see a brand new side to Hanako, with him clearly feeling genuine remorse towards Nene. Usually, even if he looks distraught in one scene, it’s later revealed that he was just joking around. So it was very refreshing to see him become a little more rounded.

Other parts of this volume that I enjoyed

❤️ The mystery turning back into her original self was so cute! I like that she kept her personality and ability to talk even after reverting back. I am a little bit confused about where she went after, but I guess I just have to wait and see.

🧡 The idea that since nothing can be born on the border, nothing can die. I thought this was a very interesting idea, and allowed all of the students to be saved!

💛 The seven mysteries “battery packs”. If they’re covered with a seal… does that mean Hanako himself is his own battery pack..? Why does he have a seal on his face, I still don’t know…

💚 The young exorcist always jumping in to help Nene – While he is generally a pretty rash character, I like how nicely he treats her! Even if it meant sacrificing his own arm!

💛 The revelation that the second mystery was an Inari fox – I would have never guessed it, but it explains why she was so obsessed with the teacher.

🧡 The mysterious girl who seems to know about Hanako-kun’s past – I can’t wait to read volume three and see more of her!!
