Natural Enemies in a Past Life… Coworkers in this one!? – Kondo wa Korosaretakunai Azarashi-san

What would you do if the man who literally ate you in your past life suddenly appeared as your coworker in the next? That’s what our protagonist has to deal with in this rom-com fantasy series!

This manga is called 今度は殺されたくないアザラシさん in Japanese.

What happens in volume one?

Our protagonist, Umino, has a rather special gift: she can understand what anyone, or anything, was in their past life. She herself was a seal, and she feels lucky to have been reborn as a human this time around. One day at her job, there’s an announcement that she will be getting her first new employee, and she’s excited to meet them until she checks what their past life was: it’s a man who used to be a polar bear. A seal’s natural enemy. Not just that, she’s able to decipher that he’s the exact polar bear who ate her in her past life.

She does her best to put distance between herself and the former predator, but it’s not exactly easy to do when she’s been tasked with teaching him the ropes of their job.

The former polar bear is actually a really nice guy, and he quickly catches romantic feelings for Umino. While Umino understands that he feels some type of way about her, she tends to misinterpret it as lingering predator instincts.

After a little while, the two do start getting along rather well… when a new coworker joins their workforce: a former orca. So, now she finds herself surrounded by her former life’s natural predators. Will she be able to make it out unscathed?

My thoughts about this volume

I think my favourite thing about this volume was how silly it was. Though Umino is a rather dramatic character, the stakes are always ridiculously low. Because of this, I was able to enjoy the story with absolutely no stress!

I do think the comedy didn’t exactly hit every single time: I really don’t understand why they made the boss a literal child. I understand the comedic effect they were going for: they were an intense character in their past life, and it’s coming out even in this life. Just, I wish they could have kept her age appropriate.

Besides this though, I really enjoyed the inclusion of all of the character’s past lives! It gave everyone excuses to do slightly silly things, but nothing was ever so over the top that I found it to be ridiculous.

What I liked most about this volume

❤️ The character designs! I feel like most of the characters at least somewhat represent their past lives.

🧡 When the orca came to work literally wet. It felt fitting for him, until it was revealed that he can’t swim. Then it just felt very funny, I really liked his introduction.

💛 The two former dinosaurs being in a relationship – they were very cute.

💚 Umino’s nail tech stirring the pot – I wish she was able to send that message before Umino swiped her phone back.

💛 The polar bear’s jealousy! It was so cute until it was revealed that the orca just had bad eyesight, and then they became buddies. This was also cute, just a different type of cute.
