A Supernatural Romance You Can’t Escape From – Yuureijou no Danna-sama

In this supernatural shoujo manga, our main character finds herself confined and forcefully married to the master of a mansion. While her new situation could have a few upsides, all Mira can focus on is the fact that it’s haunted.

What happens in volume one?

Unhappy with how a visiting prince treated her garden, Mira slaps him so hard that he falls over. This one incident decided her fate: the death penalty. After her sentencing finished, she somehow woke up—not somewhere familiar, but in the famous “ghost manor.” The master of this manor recognizes the fact that it’s strange she is still alive and well, and drops a bomb on her, telling her that she needs to marry him.

Mira, wanting to live her best life, is really not ready to settle down with some creepy guy in a creepy manor, but she doesn’t have much of a choice. Even if she was able to escape, she’s been pronounced dead. This doesn’t stop her though, and she spends a good portion of her time in the manor attempting to escape. The traps her husband set across the manor stop her from getting anywhere near the entrance. Who exactly are the traps set for? Honestly I’m not quite sure.

Throughout her time there, she slowly learns more about her mysterious husband: the ability to control ghosts is hereditary in his family. It’s in his blood—quite literally. It’s his duty to trap the spirits, particularly the malevolent ones, within the manor. This takes up a lot of his stamina—and again, blood—and it soon becomes clear why he was so desperate for a bride.

Mira eventually accepts her role as the wife of the manor and agrees to stay and help him… though she soon regrets it.

My thoughts about this volume

I’ll be honest, I didn’t actually like this volume all that much at first. I thought the reason Mira was killed off was rather dumb, and that the people in the ghost manor treated her strangely.

As I kept reading though, I slowly started to see the unique charm that it has! The vibes are this weird blend of creepy and romantic, and it works really well. Once Mira begins to slowly accept the fact that she is stuck in the manor, she also begins to reluctantly interact with the residents of the manor. I think this is what allowed me to start growing fond of her—she’s not actually an incredibly selfish character like first implied, she just wants to do what she thinks is best for her! And like… what’s wrong with that? She ends up being a rather positive influence on spooky husband’s life, pushing him to treat himself better.

There is a good deal of time spent on helping others in this volume, both with Mira taking care of her new husband, her husband taking care of the ghosts, and Mira learning how to deal with the ghosts. All of these different character interactions really kept me invested in the story!

What I liked most about this volume

❤️ The ghost animals!! So sad, but so cute. I really hope that we can see more of them as the series goes on.

🧡 Mira getting possessed by the ghost – this is, in my opinion, the catalyst that allowed Mira and her husband to begin getting closer.

💛 The gap in her husband’s personality – sometimes he’s depicted as a terrifying villain, and sometimes he’s depicted as a loving husband.

💚 Mira swallowing her fears and coming to her husbands rescue, even though she really has no defence against the ghosts.

💛 The child ghost introduced at the end of the volume – I found his introduction really interesting! I’m curious to see if there are more characters that will be “woken up” if certain conditions are met.
