What does wasureru mean in Japanese?

It’s time for our daily Japanese vocabulary! It’s important to study a little bit every day, so let’s work hard to remember one new word every single day.

Today’s word is… wasureru!

~ Please remember that I use a mix of formal and casual Japanese in these posts! I use the type of language often found in shoujo manga~

What does wasureru mean?

Wasureru is a verb that can be translated into English as: to forget.


The Kanji, it’s meaning, and it’s reading in hiragana

We use the following kanji and hiragana to write this word: 忘れる

We can write it using only hiragana like this: わすれる


Let’s try using わすれる・忘れる・wasureru in a sentence!

Example 1

English: I won’t forget the time I spent with you in this lifetime.

Romaji only: Kimi to sugoshita jikan wa isshou wasurenai yo.

Hiragana only: きみ と すごした じかん は いっしょう わすれない よ。

Final: 君と過ごした時間は一生忘れないよ。


Example 2

English: If only I could forget those memories with him…

Romaji only: Kare to no omoide o wasureraretara ii no ni…

Hiragana only: かれ と の おもいで を わすれられたら いい の に

Final: 彼との思い出を忘れられたらいいのに。。


Example 3

English: We haven’t met, have we? After all, there’s no way I could forget that face.

Romaji only: Watashitachi wa atta koto nai yo ne? datte, sono kao wa wasurerareru hazu ga nai.

Hiragana only: わたしたち は あった こと ない よ ね?だって、その かお は わすれられる はず が ない。

Final: 私たちは会ったことないよね?だって、その顔は忘れられるはずがない。


Example 4

English: I want to forget the bad things, and only remember the nice.

Romaji only: Iyana koto o wasurete, yasashii koto dake oboeteikitai.

Hiragana only: いやな こと を わすれて、やさしい こと だけ おぼえていきたい。

Final: 嫌なことを忘れて、優しいことだけ覚えていきたい。


Example 5

English: There was an exam today…? I completely forgot.

Romaji only: Kyou wa shiken no hi datta no ka… sukkari wasurechatta.

Hiragana only: きょう は しけん の ひ だった の か。。。すっかり わすれちゃった。

Final: 今日は試験の日だったのか。。。すっかり忘れちゃった。
