What does kanarazu mean in Japanese?

It’s time for our daily Japanese vocabulary! It’s important to study a little bit every day, so let’s work hard to remember one new word every single day.

Today’s word is… kanarazu!

~ Please remember that I use a mix of formal and casual Japanese in these posts! I use the type of language often found in shoujo manga~

What does kanarazu mean?

kanarazu is an adverb that can be translated into English as: always, no matter what, or certainly.


The Kanji, it’s meaning, and it’s reading in hiragana

We can use the following Kanji character to write kanarazu: 必ず.


We can write “kanarazu” using hiragana like this: かならず.


Let’s try using かならず・必ず・kanarazu in a sentence!

Example 1

English: I will absolutely protect your smile.

Romaji only: Anata no egao o kanarazu mamotteyaru.

Hiragana only: あなた の えがお を かならず まもってやる。

Final: あなたの笑顔を必ず守ってやる。


Example 2

English: Until these feelings truly reach you, I absolutely won’t quit.

Romaji only: Kono kimochi ga chanto tsutawatteru made, kanarazu akiramenai yo.

Hiragana only: この きもち が ちゃんと つたわってる まで、かならず あきらめない よ。

Final: この気持ちがちゃんと伝わってるまで、必ず諦めないよ。


Example 3

English: I’ll definitely return, so wait for me.

Romaji only: Kanarazu modoru kara, mattete kure.

Hiragana only: かならず もどる から、まってて くれ。

Final: 必ず戻るから、待っててくれ。


Example 4

English: What are you feeling so uneasy for? Your test results are definitely fine.

Romaji only: Nani moyamoya shiteru no? Testuto no kekka wa kanarazu daijoubu da yo.

Hiragana only: なに もやもや してる の?てすと の けっか は かならず だいじょうぶ だ よ。

Final: 何モヤモヤしてるの?テストの結果は必ず大丈夫だよ


Example 5

English: Even separated, this feeling will absolutely not disappear.

Romaji only: Hanareteite mo, kono kimochi wa kanarazu kienai kara.

Hiragana only: はなれていて も、この きもち は かならず きえない から。

Final: 離れていても、この気持ちは必ず消えないから。
