What happens in Volume Two?

We see Nestor and Quinta still being heavily pursued by members of the witches association at the start of volume 2, greatly hindering their options of where they can go. To start, Nestor sends Nicole out to scout a seperate location, and he and Quinta make their way to his colleagues house. In order to get into the library to submit his research and findings, he first needs to obtain several letters of recommendation. So visiting his colleague for his first letter makes absolute sense!

Though Nestor introduces this colleague, Ambrose, as his rival, it’s clear that they’re rather fond of each other. In his house Ambroke has young twin witches working with him, both of whom are smitten with Quinta as soon as they see her.

Nestor and Ambrose sit down to talk things out, and we see Nestor make certain that Ambrose isn’t on the side of the witches council. Again, while they claim to be rivals, they’re clearly rather friendly with each other.

We then are quickly introduced to someone Ambrose describes as “Nestor’s one and only friend”, a man named Jude. We soon learn then Nestor and Jude share a last name, and that’s because they’re adopted brothers! Jude was a member of Nestor’s research team a while ago, and Nestor feels a great deal of guilt after erasing all of his tracks and abandoning the team.

For some more backstory on Nestor and Ambrose:

After Nestor’s parents died, Jude’s father decided to take Nestor in. As the head of a school, the father had incredibly high expectations of both children. While Jude did well in school, he did nowhere near as well as Nestor who gained degree after degree. Every time Nestor gained a new degree, he would chastitize Jude for not being as exemplary a student as Nestor. So, after gaining all the praise their father seemingly had to offer, the fact that Nestor decided to stray from expectations and submit his research findings to the national library still has him regretting his actions. He doesn’t regret letting his father down, but rather he regrets leaving his brother.

When Jude first appeared in this volume, he had passed out after following Nestor’s tracks. When he briefly woke up he had a small reunion with him, but then went right back to sleep. Later that night while Nestor was asleep, Quinta takes it upon herself to visit with Jude after he wakes up. We see Jude instantly suspecting Quinta of having some ulterior motive for working as Nestor’s bodyguard, and she assures him that while she does indeed have an ulterior motive, she means no harm to Nestor.

It turns out that Nestor woke up while the two were having their conversation, and secretly listens in, hearing just how much bother Jude and Quinta care for him. After finding out that Nestor overheard what she said, Quinta gets flustered and runs away. When she thinks she’s alone, she speaks her biggest secret out loud ” she’s actually only 16 years old, and that’s she’s not the original Quinta “.

Right after she says this she feels someone’s presence nearby, but she isn’t able to figure out exactly who heard her. She suspects it’s either Nestor, Ambrose or Jude, but even come the end of this volume, the culprit remains unrevealed.

The next morning, they begin to work on the reason Quinta and Nestor came to the house in the first place: to receive a letter of recommendation from Ambrose. Ambrose breaks the news that while he is willing to give his recommendation, he first needs help in retrieving his family seal. It’s currently stowed away in a rather difficult place – a cave which no one has returned from alive.

After some planning and regrouping, the entire group move to the cave together, where they learn that the reason no one has ever returned from the cave alive is because there is a rogue horned dragon living there, eating everyone it comes into contact with. Being a horned dragon, it can feel magic, and is drawn instantly to Quinta. It works to separate her from everyone, and begins attacking her. As she can only use magic 3 times a day, she’s in a rather rough spot, and she ends up revealing this secret to Nestor as he rushes to help her. And he does help her!

As our gang is busy in the cave, outside of the cave there is quite a bit of drama going on. After members of the witches finish tracking Nestor and Quinta’s movements down to the cave, they begin doing something in order to capture him once more. This is put to a quick stop though, when several witches are killed off by a mysterious new character.

What I like about this volume

❤️ The art – I find this author to have a very unique artstyle, and I especially like how they draw characters when they’re smiling.

🧡 Saying things without saying them – a lot of this series is shown and not told, and I really appreciate this! I prefer a story to not hold my hand, but instead trust that I can follow along.

💛 The real Quinta? – I’m very curious to see if the new mysterious murderer that’s introduced at the very end of this volume is the “real” Quinta.

💚 The horned dragons – I really love how much personality is being given to these creatures! It makes me understand why all the researchers chose to devote so much time to understanding them.

💙 Nestor and Quinta’s relationship – I am enjoying the pacing of the progression of their relationship quite a lot! While it’s a rather slow burn, we’re never left questioning if they actually like each other or not.
