What happens in chapter 1?
Hanai is a girl of many inconsistencies. After the announcement that the restaurant she works as a waitress will be closing, one of the (much) older regulars fakes sympathy for her losing her income. To “help” her out, he offers her two choices: to work at his friends restaurant so that she can see him every day, or to go on dates with him. She’s rightfully aggressive when she turns him down, and announces that she wants absolutely nothing to do with older men.
The second she says this though, a handsome, older customer comes over to tell her that the restaurant closing will leave him rather troubled – he will literally die without her handmade juice, he says. So, naturally, he offers to allow her to move in with him in exchange for her making him juice every morning. And for some reason, that’s perfectly acceptable to Hanai! She moves in with this strange man, and begins her new life as a live-in juice maker.
So, she’s absolutely fine getting entangled with creepy older men, so long as they’re attractive.
Through living together, we learn that this man seems to be at least 15 years older that our 20 year old Hanai, and that he’s a working university professor. About 2 pages later though, we learn that this mysterious man is actually a vampire (as he is forced to suck Hanai’s blood after he’s in an accident), and it more like ~300 years older than her.
What I Like About This Manga
💜 I like the art! I find that vampire manga typically has very nice art.
💙 The setup of a few mysteries – while the pacing isn’t the best, I do like that there were a few mysteries set up in this introductory chapter.
💚 Mr. vampire teacher having potential powers through his eyes? While it hasn’t been expressly stated, I’m pretty sure there’s a reason why he always wears sunglasses.
💛 Hanai being headstrong – I do really like that she was introduced to us as she was telling off an old creep. I feel like it tells us a lot about her character, and I hope that she continues to stick up for herself throughout the series.
