If you’re a fan of misunderstood romances, I highly recommend this one! This high school shoujo romance features a boy from the Kansai area who recently moved to Tokyo, and is feared by his classmates for his scary face. What they don’t know is that he’s actually a very sweet honours student!

A quick recap of chapter 1
After moving to Tokyo, Yamaguchi has been absolutely feared by his classmates. Rumours that he was a member of the yakuza quickly spread throughout the school, and his classmates are quick to run away at the sight of him. The reason everyone is so scared of him? It’s a mixture of his facial features, but the main culprit is his piercing gaze.
On the bus one day, he runs into our female protagonist, Satsuki, as she is having an unfortunate encounter with a strange man on the train. He leaps in to help her, but unfortunately the man runs away before they can get his contact information.
Seeing him around school after this incident, Satsuki is at first very on guard around him – while he did help her out, the rumours are damning – but she quickly realizes that there’s a lot more to him than the rumours.
As they end up taking the same train most mornings, they end up developing a friendly relationship, where Yamaguchi eventually confides in Satsuki. He laments that he’s actually an honours student, and was at the top of his class in his prior school. Here though, everyone fears him as a yakuza member just because they think he’s scary. Satsuki finds his laments to be uncharacteristically cute, and asks if he wouldn’t want to try being friends.
And while they do become friends, his classmates are still very weary of him…
My Thoughts on the Volume
I enjoyed this introductory volume! I enjoy a good misunderstood trope, and I like that our FL was quick to realize that the rumours surrounding Yamaguchi were bogus. I am a little worried that there will be silly and unneeded misunderstandings from here on out, however as of right now I am enjoying this story.
I think the art is rather simple, however I do think it works for this story. While Satsuki’s character design does feel a little stale to me, Yamaguchi is definitely more unique!
