3 Shoujo Romance Manga with Toxic Love Triangles

While I tend to dislike series with love triangles, there are some that are so enticing that I just can’t help but enjoy them. These three series that I’m about to share all have two things in common: they all have a love triangle, and they all have toxic relationships.

Watashi no Machi no Chiba-kun wa / 私の町の千葉くんは

Some info about this manga

  • This is a very controversial series.
  • The love triangle features two brothers: one in high school, one the FL’s age.
  • The FL works as a teacher.
  • This series has been completed in Japanese, and also has a drama.

What’s it about?

Machi, a high school teacher, is going about her daily routine when suddenly a familiar face walks into her classroom. It’s the face of her first love… or is it? Turns out, it’s the face of her first love’s younger brother, Yuto. When Machi looks at him, she sees only her first love, and you can imagine how difficult that makes her job.

On top of that, the younger brother actually has feelings for her, claiming she is his first love. He does everything he can to get her flustered — and it’s not that hard for him to do.

Despite knowing that it’s wrong, and that he’s her student, Machi can’t help but feel drawn to him. She tries to resist, but whenever she looks at him, all she sees is her first love. One night, after hooking up with someone she met at a mixer, she finds herself imagining that he was her first love… or was it her new student? They look so similar, it’s hard for her to tell.

Mi o Kogasu hodo no Ai o Shire / 身を焦がすほどの愛を知れ

Some info about this manga

  • This is a high school romance story.
  • The FL and two ML’s have known each other since they were children.
  • It’s clear that the FL is in love with the older ML, while the younger ML sees no problem in destroying their relationship if it means that he can have her.
  • The two ML’s are brothers.

A quick recap

Having been in love with one of her childhood friends for years now, Miu has finally taken it upon herself to confess her feelings. Even if he does turn her down, it’s important to shoot your shot!

Her other childhood friend, the playboy brother of her crush, is incredibly supportive throughout, and even helps her trick her crush into going to the movies alone with her. After the movie ends, she builds up the courage to confess her feelings to him… But he literally puts his hands on her mouth as she’s mid-confession, physically blocking her from being able to finish.

To make matters worse, one of his female friends from university makes a sudden appearance, causing Miu to run away. As she’s sobbing on the floor, the playboy brother happens to find her, and takes her out to get some food until she feels better…

Stomp, Kick, Love / 踏んだり、蹴ったり、愛したり

Some info about this manga

  • This is a shoujo series about a couple with a rather unique relationship.
  • There is very good banter.
  • Both have actual careers, and are interesting characters.
  • We know who the ML will be in the end rather quickly.

A quick recap

Every day after work, Kaho goes to a bar to relax with a drink. She claims this is her only real enjoyment in life – drinking at the small intimate bar, with her friend Akira.

Kaho and Akira have a flirty relationship, but it doesn’t go past that. While Kaho admits Akira does have a nice face, he’s a known womanizer, smokes, and drinks too much, among other things. When Akira offers to walk Kaho home after drinking one night, however, their relationship dynamics changes completely.
