I read so many good series this past month that I was debating doing a top 10… But I was finally able to decide my 5 volumes that I enjoyed the most! I may still do a list of my favourite volume one’s that I read, but that’s for a later date!
The Manga!
Sekai de Ichiban Warui Majo / 世界で一番悪い魔女, Volume One

- Genre: fantasy romance, with equal focus on fantasy and romance.
- Volumes: this series is complete at 7 volumes.
Why did this manga make the list?
This is probably the manga that left the biggest impression on me this month. From the artstyle to the plot, everything about it is just so incredibly unique and complementary. While reading, I truly felt like I was transported into this magical world filled with witches and secrets.
This volume focused more on establishing the characters and plot of this story – the romance absolutely took a backseat. And for this, I am grateful. I’ve already grown attached to both main characters, and am very excited to read on and continue learning more about them. I really appreciate the author taking the time to flesh out both characters on their own – they both have their own motivations, and are their own people. This makes it easy to like them!
Love, That’s an Understatement / ひかえめに言っても、これは愛, Volume Seven

- Genre: high school yankee romance.
- Volumes: there are currently seven volumes out in Japanese, and one in English.
Why did this manga make the list?
Love, That’s an Understatement was actually my favourite manga for quite a long time! While it has been overthrown, it still holds a dear place in my heart. This volume did a fantastic job of further pushing the plot along without keeping it stale.
I really love the author’s way of balancing out the story: some drama is introduced, but not so much that it’s stressful. We see the beginning of what could end up being a drama-starter, but Lisa communicates everything to Zen, stopping it before it can even start. These gentle ups and downs are precisely why I love this series so much.

Colette Decides to Die / コレットは死ぬことにした, Volume Twelve

- Genre: fantasy romance, greek mythology
- Volumes: this volume is finished with 21 volumes in Japanese, and currently has 3 omnibusses published in English.
Why did this manga make the list?
Colette Decides to Die is my favourite manga! So, naturally, when I read a volume it’s going to end up on my top list. This volume had such impactful events to the story that it will probably stay with me forever. I’m keeping this a spoiler-free list, so if you want to know what happens you’ll have to read it! (Or wait for my review recap)
Like in every other volume, the romance that we’re shown is incredibly soft and subtle. However, there isn’t actually all that much romance in this volume! Instead, we’re shown much more of Colette and her individual growth as an apothecary. While I love the volumes that focus more-so on her relationship with Hades, I also really love the volumes that focus on Colette’s individual journey.

Tokoton Kuzuna Watarase Nanoni / とことんクズな渡良瀬なのに, Volume One

- Genre: university romance.
- Volumes: there is currently only one volume out in Japanese.
Why did this manga make the list?
It’s been a little while since i’ve found a new manga with a scummy ML, and honestly it was long overdue. Watarase is such a good ML, and he has instant chemistry with our FL.
While this series probably doesn’t have the most original plot, I do think the fact that our ML is a comedian is rather unique! I also like the forced living situation, although this is a somewhat commonly seen trope. It’s a trope for a reason! It works!
The art in this is beautiful, and the romantic scenes are perfectly written. While there’s more build-up than anything in this volume, I just know it will have a good payout.

Hebigami-kun ha Samui to Henshin Shichau Kara / 蛇神くんは寒いと変身しちゃうから, Volume One

- Genre: fantasy romance, high school romance.
- Volumes: there is currently one volume out in Japanese.
Why did this manga make the list?
While this was probably the shortest volume that I read this month, it was still very impactful! This volume reads like a webcomic, which is a genre that I really enjoy! It’s told in short episodic bits, each showing little glimpses of our main characters lives.
Our male lead is a descendent of a snake god, and he was born with a condition that causes him to turn into a snake when he’s cold. Our female lead takes it upon herself to warm him up whenever she finds him in snake-mode. That’s pretty much the premise of this series! It’s rather simple, but it works very well.
