Learn Japanese through Shoujo Manga:  応援 / おうえん / Ouen

We need to support and cheer each other on! So, let’s learn some different uses for the word “support”, so that we can use it practically!

Example Sentences

First, let’s try to translate the image above! : “全力で応援くらいさせてくれ”。

Be careful – this is a very casual sentence!

Now, let’s make a word bank:

EnglishHiragana / KatakanaKanjiRomaji (reading)
Full strengthぜんりょく全力Zenryoku
Support / cheerおうえん応援Ouen
At leastくらいN/AKurai
To allow someone to do (te form)させてN/ASasete
To receive the favour ofくれるN/AKureru

Now, let’s write it out in romaji!:

“Zenryoku de ouen kurai sasete kure”

Let’s change it to hiragana:

“ぜんりょく で おうえん くらい させて くれ”

And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:

“全力 で 応援 くらい させて くれ”

We can translate this as: “At least let me support you as much as I can!”

Let’s try a new sentence!:

If we want to type out what she’s saying, it’s: “友だちの恋の応援なんて初めてだから。”

Now, we need a word bank!

EnglishHiraganaKanjiRomaji (reading)
Friendともだち*友だちTomodachi
LoveこいKoi
To support / cheerおうえん応援Ouen
Something like…なんてN/ANante
First timeはじめて初めてHajimete
Because だからN/ADakara

Now that we know all of the relevant words, let’s put them together in a sentence!

First, in romaji only:

“Tomodachi no koi no ouen nante hajimete dakara”

Now using hiragana:

“ともだち の こい の おうえん なんて はじめて だから”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”友だち の 恋 の 応援 なんて 初めて だから”

We can translate this sentence as: “It’s my first time doing something like supporting my friends love!”

Let’s try one more sentence! What if we want to say… “If you (do me the favour of) supporting me, I have the feelings that I can do it!

This sentence is going to have a few tricky conjugations!

Let’s get the word bank started!

EnglishHiragana / KatakanaKanjiRomaji (reading)
To supportおうえん応援Ouen
To do (te form)してN/AShite
To receive (conditional form)くれたらN/AKuretara
To do (potential form)できる*出来るDekiru
To have the feeling that…きがする気がするKi ga suru

Alright, let’s make some sentences!

First, using romaji only:

“Ouen shite kuretara, dekiru ki ga shimasu!”

Now using hiragana:

“おうえん して くれたら、できる き が します!”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”応援 して くれたら、できる 気 が します!”

And that’s ouen! Have you heard this word before?
