Learn Japanese through Shoujo Manga:  返事 / へんじ / Henji

When we’re replying to someone, we can use the word “henji” ! Be careful though: there is a different word for when we replying to things like emails and texts.

Example Sentences

First, let’s try…: “When I asked him if he’s cheating on me he didn’t reply….”

Now, let’s make a word bank:

EnglishHiragana / KatakanaKanjiRomaji (reading)
HimかれKare
To cheat on someoneうわき・する浮気・するUwaki suru
*To ask (conditional)きいたら聞いたらKiitara
To answerへんじ返事Henji
To do someone the favour of (negative, past tense)してくれなかったN/AShitekurenakatta

Now, let’s write it out in romaji!:

” Kare ni uwaki shiteiru no ka to kiitara, henji shitekurenakatta. “

Let’s change it to hiragana:

“かれ に うわき している のか と きいたら、へんじ してくれなかった。”

And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:

”彼 に 浮気 している のか と 聞いたら、返事 してくれなかった。”

What if we want to say… “You shouldn’t make him wait for an answer to his confession….“?

I’m going to make this sentence a little bit more formal that what we would normally see between friends, just so we can get a feel for the grammar!

Now, we need a word bank!

EnglishHiraganaKanjiRomaji (reading)
Confessionこくはく告白Kokuhaku
Replyへんじ返事Henji
To make someone wait (te form)またせて待たせてMatasete
Can’t doいけないN/AIkenai

Now that we know all of the relevant words, let’s put them together in a sentence!

First, in romaji only:

“Hokuhaku no henji wo matasete wa ikenai yo.”

Now using hiragana:

“こくはく の へんじ を またせて は いけない よ。”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”告白 の 返事 を 待たせて は いけない よ。”

Let’s try one more sentence! What if we want to say… “I at least want an answer…!“?

This time, let’s make it a non-polite sentence! A little bit ruder than a casual sentence would be.

Let’s get the word bank started!

EnglishHiragana / KatakanaKanjiRomaji (reading)
Answer / replyへんじ返事Henji
At leastぐらいN/AGurai
To wantほしい欲しいHoshii

Alright, let’s make some sentences!

First, using romaji only:

” Henji gurai hoshii na…”

Now using hiragana:

“へんじ ぐらい ほしい な。。。”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”返事 ぐらい 欲しい な。。。”

And that’s Henji! Have you heard this word before?
