Oshiete Shitsuji-kun / おしえて執事くん: Manga Review and Thoughts

Now that I have read the entirety of the first chapter (currently free to read on Comic Days), I wanted to give an updated review! And yes, the first chapter is now fully free to read on comic days! I’m a little bit upset with myself for not waiting before purchasing the first third of the chapter, but I just needed to read it… You can check it out yourself here!

If you want to read more about my very initial thoughts, and a summary of the first chapter, check out my earlier post here!

Information About the Manga

Who wrote Oshiete Shitsuji-kun?

The authors name is Masaki Michi, and from what I can tell this is their first non-one-shot!

How many volumes are out?

There are currently 3 chapters out – this is a very new one!

What genre? What are the vibes?

  • Innocent girl x aloof boy
  • Butler x rich daughter
  • Alluded feelings x explicitly stated feelings
  • Slight age gap (he’s 4 years older)

First Impressions

Perhaps it’s just because this is the only butler x rich daughter manga i’m currently reading, or perhaps its due to my love of an aloof ML, but i’m absolutely loving this series so far. As in, I didn’t even blink when then was the only series without a free first chapter, I just dived right in.

I think both characters are rather realistic, especially when you consider their positions. The butler, being a butler, understands his position. Even if he were to develop feelings for the daughter he’s serving, of course he can’t act on those feelings. And so, he acts aloof. Likewise, the daughter is a high school student, and is incredibly spoiled. Of course she’s really not going to second guess her feelings! Her going all in from the beginning makes sense, and is really fun to watch.

My Favourites

  • The butlerrrrr
  • Realistic depictions of human relationships
  • The butlers way of speaking is super formal, so it becomes a bit of a Japanese review for me hehe

My Least-Favourites

  • The fact that there are only 3 chapters out so far

The Characters

Kikyou

  • Spoiled girl in love with Hanayagi

Character traits

Kikyou, being the only daughter of an incredibly rich family, was incredibly spoiled and foul-tempered until she met Hanayagi. Due to them both being very young, he was given some leeway, and wasn’t fired when he talked some sense into her. And from there, Kikyou was madly in love with him.

She makes a lot of moves on him, all of which he skillfully slides by. Kikyou is an incredibly straightforward girl, aiming straight for what she wants, and I respect her for that!

Hanayagi

  • Aloof butler

Character traits

Hanayagi is Kikyou’s personal butler. While he clearly understands Kikyou’s feelings for him, he never really explicitly accepts nor denies her advances. He’s very comfortable around her, and often jokes around with her.

He is very skilled when it comes to dealing with Kikyou, and is almost always able to keep her in check. His very subtle way of speaking leaves Kikyou unsure of whether he likes her back or not – likely on purpose.

Really appreciate this post and also your mini review of this manga! I found out about this manga through Dessert Magazine’s twitter account and seeing it on CMOA so I got immediately interested from the artstyle and premise. I am intermediate in Japanese and do read manga in JP when I can, but I wanted to see if there were any reviews or explanations of the manga before I invested in it since it only had a few chapters. I mainly read manga in English from my library since it’s much faster for me to read in English but I will definitely take the time to read this in Japanese and not wait. Bought the first volume online!
