Not just in shoujo manga, the act of changing schools is common thing found in all manga that take place in high schools! As many shoujo manga tend to take place in schools, it’s safe to say that we will run into a student or two that move schools.

While it’s a rather popular theme for these new students to become popular, or love interests, that isn’t always the case! Either way, let’s look at some different ways we can use this word!

Example Sentences

First, let’s try a simple sentence!: “She changed schools last year.”

Now, let’s make a word bank:

English	Hiragana / Katakana	Kanji	Romaji (reading)
She	かのじょ	彼女	Kanojo
Last year	きょねん	去年	Kyonen
To change schools (past tense)	てんこう・しました	転校・しました	Tenkou shimashita

Now, let’s write it out in romaji!:

”Kanojo wa kyonen tenkou shimashita.”

Let’s change it to hiragana:

”かのじょ　は　きょねん　てんこう　しました。”

And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:

”彼女　は　去年　転校　しました。”

**While the word “kanojo”, or “彼女”, can mean girlfriend… it also holds the meaning of “her” or “she”.

What if we want to say… “I don’t want to be seperated from my friends, so I don’t want to transfer schools.” A very real sentiment, shoujo manga or not!

First up, we need a word bank!

English	Hiragana	Kanji	Romaji (reading)
Friend(s)	ともだち	友達	Tomodachi
To be seperated from (want form, negative)	はなれたくない	離れたくない	Hanaretakunai
Because / so	ので	N/A	Node
To change schools (want from, negative)	てんこうしたくない	転校したくない	Tenkoushitakunai

Now that we know all of the relevant words, let’s put them together in a sentence!

First, in romaji only:

“Tomodachi to hanaretakunai node, tenkou shitakunai desu.”

Now using hiragana:

“ともだち　と　はなれたくない　ので、てんこう　したくないです。”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”友達　と　離れたくない　ので、転校　したくないです。”

Let’s try one more sentence! What if we want to say… “When I changed schools, I met my current boyfriend!“? I’m going to include a word that a boyfriend probably really doesn’t want to be referred as here, just to spice things up a little!

Let’s get the word bank started!

English	Hiragana / Katakana	Kanji	Romaji (reading)
To change schools (conditional)	てんこう・したら	転校・したら	Tenkou shitara
Current boyfriend	*いまかれ	今彼	Imakare
To meet (past tense)	あいました	会いました	Aimashita

**Phrases like “imakare” “今彼” and “Saikin no kare” “最近の彼” can imply that you’re going to be seeing someone else in the near future. Not always! But be careful when using these words. When in doubt, just use “kareshi” “彼氏”.

Alright, let’s make some sentences!

First, using romaji only:

“Tenkou shitara, imakare to aimashita.”

Now using hiragana:

”てんこう　したら、いまかれ　と　あいました。”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”転校　したら、今彼　と　会いました。”
