Learn Japanese through Shoujo Manga:  バイト / Baito

Having a part time job is something most high schoolers go through, and our shoujo characters are no different!

The word for part time job in Japanese is actually “アルバイト” or “arubaito”, but it’s often shortened to just “バイト” or “baito” Japanese really loves a good abreviation! This word stems from a German word – you would be surprised by the amount of loan words found in Japanese!

Example Sentences

First, let’s try a simple sentence!: “I have an interview for a part time job tomorrow!”

Now, let’s make a word bank:

EnglishHiragana / KatakanaKanjiRomaji (reading)
Tomorrowあした明日Ashita
Part time jobバイトN/ABaito
Interviewめんせつ面接Mensetu
To have /
to exist
ありますN/AArimasu

Now, let’s write it out in romaji!:

“Ashita wa baito no mensetsu ga arimasu.”

Let’s change it to hiragana:

“あした は バイト の めんせつ が あります。”

And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:

”明日 は バイト の 面接 が あります。”

What if we want to say… “I quit my part time job yesterday” Something many working shoujo manga high schoolers dream of, I imagine!

First up, we need a word bank!

EnglishHiraganaKanjiRomaji (reading)
Yesterdayきのう昨日Kinou
Part time jobバイトN/ABaito
To quit (past tense)やめました辞めましたYamemashita

Now that we know all of the relevant words, let’s put them together in a sentence!

First, in romaji only:

“Kinou wa baito o yamemashita.”

Now using hiragana:

“きのう は バイト を やめました。”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”昨日 は バイト を 辞めました。”

Let’s try one more sentence! What if we want to say… “My boyfriend recently got a part time job!“? Maybe so he can save up money to buy an anniversary present~?

Let’s get the word bank started!

EnglishHiragana / KatakanaKanjiRomaji (reading)
Recently / The other dayこのあいだこの間Kono aida
Myわたしの私のWatashi no
Boyfriendかれし彼氏Kareshi
Part time jobバイトN/ABaito
To get (past tense)できました出来ましたDekimashita

Alright, let’s make some sentences!

First, using romaji only:

‘Kono aida, watashi no kareshi wa baito ga dekimashita!”

Now using hiragana:

“このあいだ わたし の かれし は バイト が できました!”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”この間 私 の 彼氏 は バイト が できました!”

And that’s baito! Have you heard this word before?
